I've got the Reg, I wasn't sure if it was appropriate to share?

    2 schools of thought

    1) If it's ok to drive/be seen in public then it's fair game to share

    2) if you 'disappear' some time after sharing then we know it wasn't ok :rotfl:

Saw a black Rolls Royce at the weekend, parked at a local shopping outlet. At first glance I thought it might be a Chrysler, with some pimping, but as I got closer I'm positive it was a genuine RR.
I'm assuming you mean a Chrysler 300 - which suggests to me that you've seen a Ghost!

Has the plate been tweaked to look misinterpreted?
That's not impossible. Diplomatic plates are 999D999 or 999X999 so that would be distinctive.

I saw a Rolls-Royce Dawn on Sunday (first time I've seen one on the road) - with the number plate REG 1
I need to think of something new here...

It'd still need taxed though, and presumably some record of being self insuring (as I think you need to have some minimum amount of money set aside for the liability, otherwise anyone stopped for having no insurance could just claim self insuring)

    True

(yes you have £500,000 set aside)

However when checking the MOT history, no car was found against it's plate (private), and no insurance was held on the car.
Could it have been a Bentley? Pimped Chryslers tend to have fake Bentley badging, not RR.

And, frankly, there's not much mistaking a RR for anything - if it was a Phantom, they're bloody huge. The smaller Ghost is 7-series size, still a good chunk bigger than a 5-series size Chrysler.

But if the insurance check's not coming back with anything, then you may well have noted the plate down wrong - or the plate's ONLY just been transferred onto it... or the plate shown isn't the real one.

Maybe the plate has only just transferred ? I believe it tends to mess up some of the online data ?

Don't think I'm busting official secrets to suggest yes of course some cars have their details veiled from public view - a lot of unmarked police & other surveillance cars will go 'muffled'.

Doesn't exempt them from anything & if the driver makes a criminal error, their management chain is invoked. Mind if we do not go into exactly how I know?

So glad I'm out of that now...

You're unlikely to use a Rolls Royce as a surveillance vehicle.

Can't see the benefit of a blocked number not being on the tax database. After all everyone can see what it is.

If you are unsure of the vehicle make, try the VRN on a tyre ordering website.

Edit - though I guess that only shows what MID does.

So if you see a suspicious car about, parked opposite your house say, you check the tax, and if nothing comes back, you know rather than suspect, who it is.

Be less suspicious if the details just came back same as any other car

An unfamilliar car parked in our street is likely to be
    a) selling drugs
    b) waiting to buy drugs
    c) trying to catch a) or b)
I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

(except air quality and Medical Science ;))

An unfamilar car in our lane's likely to be lost...
