Just take the coins into any bank & say you want to exchange for notes. They'll count them & give you notes
I have been to all Banks today, plus post office and a building society and unless you have an account they will not change coins.

So your experience is consistent with the rebuttals of that quoted post in #13 and #20 above!

However, if you've been to all banks, presumably this would include your own: why would you not just go there in the first place?

Market traders like a lot of change. We know two who will take our change if we have a lot. I just ring them, let them know how much and what denominations and take it to them. Saves them going to the bank and carrying bags of coinage.
I think this job really needs
    a much bigger hammer.
