Rental - Can I just throw out broken items?

Comments

  • If you DO throw things out, who decides the 'value' of the item? I assumed you'd have to replace it with a new item, rather than one of the same value
TBH this is exactly why I wouldn't throw the items away because of the potential for the LL to claim that they were worth far more than they actually were.

For the sake of storing one lamp I wouldn't make too much of a fuss about it because they is always the chance that the LL chooses not to renew your tenancy next time around.

I know this sounds petty but LL have not renewed tenancies over far pettier things than this before.

The TV we have stuck in the bottom of a cupboard. It's annoying, but it's sort of out of the way. The lamp is a standard lamp, so there's really nowhere for it to go.

I should perhaps point out that the 'inventory' is in fact the check out report from 2014 - we did ask for a new inventory to be done but it never has. My suspicion is that most of the things in the flat weren't actually bought by the landlord at all - the letting agent probably charged the previous tenants for removal of all this stuff!

I'll try and get written permission from the agent to get rid of it, and if they don't make a decision we'll contact the landlord directly i guess.

The deposit adjudicator ( and anyone with access to the Internet...) determines the value of any item.

The letting agent might've charged for removal - perfectly acceptable.

Google betterment - new for old replacement is not reasonable.

1: why renew? Just let it go monthly

2: the LL can claim they were gold and diamond studded, but it's about what they can prove :)

Ask the landlord to repair the faulty items. As an alternative, offer to dispose of them at no expense to the landlord.

The OP is sure to be renting a property with so much cupboard space available that they can store heaps of old junk without affecting their capacity to store their own belongings
That is why it is so annoying to have to keep hold of it but better than paying to replace it later.

But better still to get permission to dispose of it.

And I ask, as others have already, that you learn how to press the quote button.

I have been doing so but it doesn't appear to work so I formatted like this instead.

Sorry but who had already asked me?

Is there some kind of rule on exactly how your forum posts must be formatted?

    It should appear like this:
    Text.....

(Except remove the spaces before the ']' )

It helps people to know who and what you are responding to.

You were asked on another thread. I can't be bother to look again to find which one. If you continue to flout the established forum etiquette then people will start to ignore or discount your posts, whether they have any value or not.

Stick them in the back of a cupboard and forget about them until you move out.
It is annoying that you have to keep this old rubbish but honestly this is the best piece of advice really.

Quite. My daughter and her flatmate have "The cupboard of shame". :D
