This makes no sense as you can easily have a landline number even if you don't have a landline. I have had a voip landline number for years but have not used a physical landline for years.

There are databases of landline numbers that determine who provided them, so in theory at least it's possible to see if a number is a "real" landline or not. Not sure if the databases are updated if a number is ported.

When applying for a mortgage I've been advised to include a landline number as it supposedly improves the overall credit assessment. Whether or not they check if it's a "real" landline I have no idea.

I do have a landline number which I have used on a remortgage application, but there's no phone plugged into it and I only have it because I have no other options to get broadband.

I have not had a landline for 10 years and have never ever had a problem opening accounts.

Looks like it's now possible to port your old landline number to voip - I'm not sure I'd bother as my old landline number was not a nice easy to remember number and the beauty of voip is being able to choose a really easy to remember number (eg 01823 xxxyyy) rather than being allocated one randomly (eg 01823 xabycd).

I don't think there are readily available database's of ported numbers(for commercial use), bt open reach would know if a number is a open reach/bt line but not cable and vice versa for virgin. There is a database of numbers to addresses for 999 but Id think many VoIP numbers are out of date (and maybe not just used at one address anyway)

As I understand it the porting process is actually a permanent redirect in the doner operators network, is all calls go to doner, who then forwards them o to new network
