You have a MAP (manifold absolute pressure) sensor not MAF (mass airflow), looks as though BeenThroughItAll is right. It will be a small cube on top of the inlet manifold, or connected to it via a rubber pipe.

If the rev counter drops, assuming it didn't immediately slow to 30, then there is something wrong with the signal informing the ecu of the engine rotation- so crankshaft sensor..

These rarely if ever put the warning light on.
:rotfl: have you ever been in mk4 golf, I can tell you if it doesn't like the way its being treated itll tell you with a warning light and fault code. Crank sensor IS governed by the ECU it actually has very tightly set parameters within the ECU's coding to throw a code, so if its not a happy chappy it will tell you with the EML.

Crank sensor is the No.1 bug bear of Pug 206 and 307 owners to as it throws the ECU into a hissy fit when it starts to go faulty and the car cries "anti pollution fault" in petrol models.

I find crank sensors in MK4 golfs not to be problematic as MAF and MAP sensors to go along with the faulty Fly By Wire stepper motor throttles.

Have to say I've not knowingly been in one (wouldn't know a MK4 from a MK2,3,5,6,7 tbh, but I know what a mk1 looks like):D

The vauxhalls I've had have eaten crank sensors like elephants eat sticky buns, and they don't set the eml, neither does the Suzuki.

  • Was talking to my brother about this.

A mate of his had a MK4 1.6. Now whether it's the same engine coding, since VW love to create 101 engines for the same capacity engine, i don't know, but he needed a new crank sensor he was telling me & he's known of other people with MK4s needing new crank sensors too, sounds like something of a common problem.

But anyway, so we should be looking at a new MAP sensor (that's maP not maF? - just for clarification)?
  • Oh & does anyone here know how to pick up a genuine sensor for this engine? (I remember it has a Z in the 3 letter coding).

I know i could go to Volkswagen direct & pay about £emptyyourbankaccount but if there's such a website that sells proper genuine sensors then i could buy from there.

From previous experience i'd rather not buy a 'like genuine' sensor. Didn't work out in the past & don't fancy making the same mistake again.
  • If memory serves Bosch are the OEM suppliers of sensors to VAG group.
  • Just getting round to getting this booked in.

So based on what was said here are you saying it needs a MAP sensor or a Crank sensor, or are they one & the same?

    MAP sensor: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Bosch-Map-Sensor-0281002399-/301750654541?fits=Model%3AGolf%7CPlat_Gen%3AMK+IV&hash=item4641bd964d:g:5-kAAOSwWnFWBX8V

Crank sensor: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-Golf-MK4-Bora-1J2-Bosch-Engine-Crankshaft-Speed-Sensor-Car-Replacement-Part-/301309687884?fits=Model%3AGolf%7CPlat_Gen%3AMK+IV&hash=item462774f84c:g:oU4AAOSwxH1UECGk Since this keeps putting in a smiley face thing the item number is 301309687884

My wife has said that the car is still doing it on & off, sometimes quite bad sometimes not so bad so better to get the sensor replaced. Just want to do the right one.

    Thanks

I don't believe a word of this, it's well known that VW Golf is the most reliable car, you only need look at how infrequently they get mentioned on these foru........... Never mind :o

    Ninth Anniversary Combo Breaker
My only experience with a crank sensor fault was difficult cold starting. Turned out to be a build up of dirt, probably from the road as it was a N/S engine, which was probably masking the magnetic signal, in combination with the lowered battery voltage during a cold start. Hot starts were not affected.
On another car I had occasional complete loss of power and after a hairy incident at night time in the RH lane of the M25 I had a good look and found that the cables feeding the air mass meter on the fuel injection were stretched a bit tight. Pulling in a bit of slack from elsewhere in the harness cured that one.
