  • you claim to be in financial hardship but I am curious to find out how you can be considering purchasing a fourth Apple product?

You posted on 26 October for opinions on buying and iPad Pro when you already own a iPad Air, iPhone 7 plus and a MacBook Pro. Three days later your talking about hardship.

I think you need to look at this thread from an outside perspective.

Yeah although by far that didn't say I was considering buying one recently whatsoever. The idea was that I was planning on selling my current one and putting it towards adding one to my mobile contract, although I was hoping for at least in a year or so. I have a gap year from university next year for a work placement so I was thinking once I've saved a bit of money from that

These are all luxury items including a £40 mobile contract.

Your best course of action is to speak to your university money adviser.

I doubt you'd be eligible for hardship but they'll certainly help you with budgeting.

Do you have a student bank account with overdraft?

You should consider yourself very lucky to have these luxury items. I also don't think your family have done you any favours in giving you so much and not encouraging you to live within your means.

As others have already said it's is unlikely that you will receive help from the hardship fund and SFE will not adjust your funding unless your father gives his details.

I hope you don't ever experience real hardship as it really is dreadful. Be grateful for what you have and learn to live within your means.
  • Your step-dad might know exactly what he's earning now, but can't he get a figure for the complete tax year which SFE need to calculate your loan. If you call them up, they'll tell you which year they need. Does your step-dad have his P60 for the year in question, or his completed tax return? I should imagine the return would have been submitted for the year required long before now.

I used to be Starrystarrynight on MSE, before a log in technical glitch!

for the current academic year it would be financial information for the tax year 14/15 that would need to be submitted.

If the household income has dropped between 14/15 and now then a CYI for can be submitted.

Seriously, OP, get a grip. A quick look through the threads you have initiated in the past month shows you run a new car with free breakdown yet you're asking for advice as to which added-value bank account you should open? You own three different Apple devices and you're asking for advice on buying a fourth. You bank, or have banked, with (at least) FD, Barclays, Halifax and Lloyds, none of which have been actual student accounts which are geared to those in your stage of life. You seem more concerned with customer service and whether Indian call centres are worse than UK ones. Other threads are simply questions which would be easily answered by either phoning the organisation with which you already have a relationship, or simply searching on Google or comparing Ts&Cs.

    Top trolling.

I'm hardly trolling when I've been using this website for most of this year looking for the best advice out there regarding banks, saving money and working out what my best options are from other people with experience.
After all, it's what the website is about. You've posted on two threads with 0 thank you's. I think we all know who's really trolling here :)

When I was at uni, funding was based on the previous tax year so your stepdad will know what he has earnt from his P60, and if he has lost his job he will know it will be less then last years and can give the P60 amount and can be corrected when he is able to work out the figure, his reluctance to fill in the form does maybe suggest he has something to hide, if he is maybe claiming benefits and he doesnt want to get found out, as he has declared another figure maybe?

If he is reluctant to fill out the form then your finance will be calculated on the amount already declared, or nothing if SF are requiring a new figure for the current year (not sure if it is submitted each year as I graduated in 2011, when it was still calculated by LA, and not SF)

My suggestion to help you out of the predicament you fund yourself in, maybe hand back your contract phone that you got early last month, at a cost of £40 a month, make a lunch and take it into uni with you, saves at least £60 a month, and could you sell your car? and get some funds to help you out, and go back to using buses, a earlier one so you can make sure you are on time, or car share with someone else who lives locally to you if they drive or get a lift, (this must be cheaper then insuring and running a car, if you are as skint as you say its a luxury you probably cant afford.

You also mention that you have a mac book pro, if this essential for your degree? could get some funds by selling it, and getting another one when you graduate or you get the funds that your grandmother has been saving for you, after all working your new job will bring in some much needed funds,

Some thoughts for you to chew over, but I would agree with other posts on here, that you need to work out a budget and live within your means, and not just borrow your way out of problems, its only a slippery slope for the future, especially when you graduate and you no longer a student and you have to pay your way out of overdrafts, attracting interest, or maybe you are living for the now...?

Your answer is the best, most honest and polite answer I've had on this entire thread and for that I'm truly grateful! :)
We've talked about the funding thing and well he doesn't want his banks and income details being 'spied' upon by the government and everything. He isn't hiding anything and I know he's not otherwise he would have told me. We are really open like that, I know he has debts himself and other problems going on and he's always been open. He tries his hardest to support me the best he can and I cannot argue with him in all fairness.
I wanted to fill in the form for free prescriptions last year until they wanted to know the ins and outs of how much money I had in my bank accounts, I decided it was easier to just pay for my prescriptions, And I can remember we discussed that even back then about how we don't agree with the way they want to invade your privacy like that.

I'm unfortunately past the period I can hand my phone back over, but nevertheless, I have been starting to eat more lunches at home or take something with me as well so there is that :)

But in regards to selling my MacBook and my car, well they were gifts from my grandma and she would be heartbroken if I did sell them. She'd constantly reassure me that I should have just asked her for help, or asked for the money in the account she has for me. But there's a reason I don't ask for the money in that account, which people didn't really grasp here, and that's that my grandma is a very giving person, she gives to everybody. Every time I've ever asked to borrow money from my savings, she's gone into her own pocket and given me it, and I feel guilty every time she does that because I should be paying my own way! I've said this to everybody in my family for the past year now that I need to start paying my own way, but my grandma just wants to provide for me the best she can. She's one of these people who constantly talks about how she can't take money with her when she passes away so she wants to spend it on loved ones and see them happy with it.

But point proven, again today, I asked her if I could borrow some money from the account she has for me until I start my job, and well she went upstairs to her purse and gave me £80. I told her she better replace it with the money in the account, but she gave me that look telling me to shut up and stop arguing with her.. :rotfl:

And yeah I also do agree with everybody that I need to budget. I used to be absolutely fantastic at budgeting and working out how much I'll have coming in and going out. But since starting at university now, my finances have been a little messy and I haven't been able to budget as well as I used to but I'm getting back on that, it's just been a rough few months, but starting work and saving up again is my main plan right now. If I get around £144 a week for example, I've considered saving the £44 each week, and putting the £100 towards my weekly essentials, and anything left over from that can also be saved. At least it will put me on until Christmas and also be there to buy people nice presents this year :) (Within reason that is :rotfl: )

I was thinking just the same yesterday about the OP's posts. It may not be deliberate trolling but the effect of the scatter gun approach is very similar.
