Switching from Eon

Options
I am currently in the process of switching from Eon to Iresa as I am coming to the end of my price fix. I applied to switch to Iresa on 5th October, with my fix ending 28th October, but now realise they aren't part of the faster-switch agreement. They don't initiate the switch until after the 14 day cooling not off period, which according to the emails, was on the 19th, with an anticipated switch date 16 days after this.

Today I have just received an email from eon indicating I am now on their variable rate tariff, so my question is, will I be charged at these new rates from now until my switch, even though I applied to switch 3 weeks before the end date? I'm sure I have read somewhere about a switching window 20 days after the new prices come in, but I can't seem to find that now.

Can anyone confirm this for me?

Thanks

This may be the post you have seen by Malc the E.on rep:
You might already know but, just in case, thought I'd mention the Price Protection window. As you're on the MSE Collective we were involved with last year I suspect you're in this window now. It kicks in when fixed term contracts like yours near the end. It's open 49 calendar days before the tariff end date until 20 working days after. During this time and provided we're told, we'll make sure you're protected against any price changes that aren't in your favour whilst a change of supplier goes through. Switches usually take about two and half weeks. Exit fees also don't apply whilst this window is open. Malc

It's also in the E.on terms and conditions:

14.2 What happens at the End Date

You’ll receive a renewal notice from us about 6 weeks before your End Date to remind you that your tariff is coming to an end.
Your renewal notice will tell you about the E.ON EnergyPlan prices and terms and conditions that you will be switched to after the End Date unless you agree a new tariff with us or another supplier. You can find details of our other tariffs by going to eonenergy.com/services or calling us on 0333 202 4608.
    If:
you switch to another E.ON tariff no more than 20 working days after your End Date; or
you switch to another supplier, and:

your new supplier notifies us of your switch within 20 working days of your End Date (this will normally be after a cooling off period of up to 14 days); and
    your switch is completed within three weeks of us receiving that notice;

we will keep you on your old E.ON uSwitch Fixed 1 Collective Oct 2015 prices and terms and conditions until your switch is complete.

I would read the above terms and conditions as:
If your new supplier informs E.on that you are changing supplier up to 20 working days after the End Date of your E.on fixed tariff and your switch date is within three weeks of E.on receiving that notice your fixed rate tariff would be extended to the end of your time with E.on. (effectivly it could extend the E.on fixed trariff by some 6-7 weeks)

Perhaps Malc could confirm my interpretation ?
  • Thank you so much! I knew I'd read it somewhere, just couldn't put my finger on it when searching and began to doubt myself!

Good news as I don't fancy being on the SVR prices for even a short period of time!

Hello firsttimemover and sorry to lose you. Already some excellent advice from Micron. Thanks Micron.

From the dates quoted you should be okay. It depends on when your new supplier actually applies to take over your account.

The Price Protection window applies to fixed tariffs. It's open 49 calendar days before the end date until 20 working days after. Provided we're told, we'll keep you on the cheaper prices whilst a change of supplier goes through. Exit fees also don't apply whilst in this window.

Micron's right. This will apply up until the supply end date but, as above, your new supplier does need to apply for the account before the window closes. If they don't, you'll stay on the standard tariff from the closing date of the fix up until the date the supply switches. As above, if they applied on 19 October, this is well before the end of the tariff on 28 October so sounds okay.

If you've registered with our website, you'll be able to tell if the account has been applied for. If it has, certain tools like entering readings, using the Direct Debit Manager or Real Time Billing will have been suspended.

    Hope this helps firsttimemover.

Excellent advice Micron. Thanks for that.

Your interpretation is spot on. As above in reply to the OP, with fixed deals, the Price Protection window is open 49 calendar days before the end date until 20 working days after but the new supplier does need to apply for the account during this time. Once they've applied, prices are protected up until the supply end date. If they don't apply or apply outside of this window, accounts will stay on our Energy Plan prices from the tariff end date.

    Hope this explains.

    Hi firsttimemover,

We are also switching from E.on to Iresa for Electric. How soon after Iresa took the first Direct Debit Payment did you see that they had applied to E.on to take over the account, by not being able to register meter readings, etc (as stated by Malc above)?

Just a quick heads up ASavvyBuyer. Once a new supplier applies to takeover, the account will be locked down at this point. This happens very early in a switch and not at the end of the cooling off period as used to happen before faster switching was brought in. This is assuming the new supplier has signed up for faster switching (takes about two and half weeks). Most have, I believe, but not sure about everyone.

Hope this helps ASavvyBuyer and sorry to lose you.

Morning Maxwell007 and, yes, our Energy Fixed 1 Year version 20 is the cheapest tariff we currently have available through both our sales channels and website.
