Can I box in a gas flue?

Options
I am looking at installing GCH and to make it worthwhile (meaning I can put the boiler in the airing cupboard) the flue will run across the corner of the celing and the wall in the lounge.

This is a better option than siting in the lounge, as I am limited for space. And by the time its boxed in it will look like a beam

Are there any rules and regs about accessing the flue for servicing and if so does anyone know what they are? I assume access may be needed, but are there any guidelines?

A little bit of a naughty way of getting authoritative advice would be to get BG in to give you an estimate. They will probably be the most expensive, but they are very knowledgeable and will tell you what is allowed or not.

It will give you a ballpark figure for other estimates as well.

    :o Steady.

    Hi MRF

You are right about the flue being accessible, it must be available for inspection along it's entire length . A box with a removable cover would be ok.The only possible problem will be the overall length and the fact that it will have to fall back to the boiler by a minimum of 2.5 degrees (44mm per metre.) to allow the condensate to drain into the boiler.
An example is a Glow-worm Flexicom. Maximum horizontal flue length is 8 metres. For every bend reduce that by 1 metre. Then add the cost of flue extensions 1metre will cost you £25. 38 plus VAT in City Plumbing.
Not sure if you have a means of getting the condensate to waste.
As Cardew suggests maybe get BG to visit, they must do thousands of quotes that go nowhere.

Thanks very much for the reply. I has BG round a couple of weeks back before I had thought up the question. They quoted £2k more than the two quotes I am choosing between.

Yeah - I have taken into account the angle and it if I get the boxing done professionally that I guess this is achiveable, and there is no problem with accessing waste.

    Hi Canucklehead

I have just taken a look at the glow worm boiler you've described, and the flue is described as being the following, as I'm boxing in I am obviously concerned about diameter - does this mean it is 60mm or 100mm - as if it is 60mm it will be much better than the worcester bosch I have been quoted that requires a 120mm flue for the 4m run required in my flat.

    Concentric Flue Ø60/100 accessories:
2 metre extension kit, concentric flue

Also, the worcester bosch requires a 150mm terminating distance from a gap in the building fabric such as a window frame, do you know if the gloworm has similar as I could not see it in the manual anywhere

Sounds like the flue is 100mm outer diameter with 60mm inner flue, air is drawn in from outside between the inner and outer, and the exhaust gasses exit through the central part.
