Manchester and surrounding areas

Hi,
My partner and I are relocating to Manchester for his work. We don't know the area very well but would like to buy somewhere in the East of Manchester as we are from Leeds and would like good links back there. We would like to be within a good commuting distance to Manchester city centre and some countryside, so we have been looking around Glossop and such areas but it seems a bit far out. Is there anywhere closer to Manchester city centre that may suit us? Looking at £160k top end limit and would like a decent sized 2 or 3 bed.
Thanks in advance!

If you don't know Manchester that well, why not rent initially?

If you intend driving to Leeds, you may get more for your money if you live further out than the city centre of Manchester. The M62 provides a good link between North Manchester and Leeds.

Mossley or Stalybridge are around 15 mins on the train to Manchester, Mossley in particular is semi rural.

That money would buy you a reasonable and nice terrace in Whitefield or Unsworth (maybe even a semi needing a bit of work) Close to the Metrolink and a 20 min ride into Manchester City centre or a 10 minute ride into Bury. Some parts of Salford are OK too.

I'd agree with this - lovely area - Uppermill is a bit more expensive but beautiful. Nice 2/3 bed stone terraces with small garden around the £160 mark.
Look for good Tram connections too.
  • Glossop is quite far from the city - if he works in the normal commute times it will take along time to get/out of the city from that location (assuming his job is now in the centre)- Stayley bridge is a good area not to close to the city but fairly fast to get in or you could get more for your money edging slightly north east of the city into Oldham , There are a lot of new builds in oldham within that price range..

I live in Glossop and love it. You can get a lot of house here for your money. I work in Manchester and commute by train, it takes 30 minutes to Piccadilly. I find it pretty reliable and not overcrowded. Driving is not fun unless you leave very early. Husband drives to Wakefield a couple if days a week for work

The M62 provides a good link between North Manchester and Leeds.
But a pretty dreadful commute time during rush hour.

It very much depends on what you amenities you expect near your home, and if you want to commute by car, tram or train? If you are after a rural location, I'd recommend north east of Manchester, between Shaw and Saddleworth, maybe Marsden? Shaw has decent house prices and a tram stop. But the closer you get to the Peak District, the more of a premium there is on house prices. If you prefer a nice community and plenty of shops and restaurants, I would try Calderdale, around half an hour on the train to Manchester Victoria, the same goes for anywhere nice along the train line east (e.g., Glossop, as above).

I agree, Bury is a good alternative. Still, the commute on the tram to central Manchester is around 45 minutes, or around 1.5 hours by car during rush hour. Having tried all of the above, I'd prefer the train :)

Lived in Saddleworth 15 years ago, Uppermill is great, along with Diggle Dobcross and Delph. Currently have lived in Bury for the last 7 years, which is a really good hub for what you require. The Metrolink gets you from the bus station in central Bury, to the centre of Manchester in 25 minutes. A couple of stops later, the same tram gets you inside Piccadilly rail station, for Leeds and London Virgin train. Bury Outside Market, has been voted best in the country. A previous poster mentioned the M62 as busy throughout the day. Certainly agree with that!

Do you want to actually be out in the countryside, or just have some green space near you? £120K will buy you a 3bed semi in Clayton / Droylsden, with easy commuting into the city but also Clayton Vale right at the end of the street(s) for green space.
