Disney ticket disaster

  • Thanks for your comments. As this was such a special holiday for us all, which has taken 18 months to plan and save for, it would have been spoilt if only some of us had gone. My daughter-in-law didn't come out of hospital until after we should have departed so using a wheelchair was never an option and we felt that we were needed here to help in her 14 week recovery as she has two young (and very disappointed children). We are, of course, covered by our individual insurances for the holiday cancellation but it seems that tickets must be purchased as part of the holiday to ensure cover. We had hoped that the holiday parks would show the same compassion as Discovery Cove, who have extended our tickets until we are able to travel. Disney tickets also state they are not transferrable so not even sure if we could sell on.

Have you tried posting on THE DIBB a really good site for Disney planning with some real experts to help you.

Are these proper tickets or e-tickets?

If they are proper tickets I think you can sell them. However if they are a voucher which is to be exchanged for a ticket or loaded onto a band then you can't.

For future reference, there really is no need to buy tickets in advance in the UK. It's just as simple and cheap to buy them just before you need them. US bought tickets don't expire either.
  • They are proper tickets but we have been told that as we have linked them to My Disney Experience we can't transfer. So many people buy in advance that we thought it was the best way to go but have learnt a very expensive lesson.
  • Update on this thread - finally, after involving The Sun newspaper, Disney have decided to issue us with new tickets for 2017. Massive thanks to Mel Hunter at The Sun, just sad that Disney would not act without her intervention. We hope to reschedule our holiday in 2017.

So next time you'll take out adequate insurance rather than relying on the gutter press to get you out of a mess?

We also find that our insurance company only cover tickets that were purchased as part of a holiday package and so have no way of recouping this money. Any suggestions as to a way forward?

It sounds like you didn't have the correct insurance cover for the type of holiday. Yes it would cover a full medical cancellation but you need a policy that covers for consequential loss if you're not on a package ie travelling independently. Without it there's nothing joining the parts of your holiday together, so if eg your flight was cancelled for some reason and you couldn't get another, or airspace was closed, the airline would refund the flight costs but any other prepaid charges eg accommodation, car hire, tickets etc would not be covered by insurance because they're not part of the affected booking, and are still available for use.
