Of course people have different views on whether a subscription is worth it over a standalone licence but Office 365 is quite happy to work offline until it needs to verify its status again. There isn't much going on in the background.

Yes but if your internet connection goes down at that point you're stuffed. Happens all too easily, in fact all the time even if you're with one of the big suppliers. It's what's put me off "upgrading" to Office365.

Indeed, which is something to think about when deciding whether you think signing up for subscription software is worth it for yourself. Other people's views may vary.

Do you have any evidence of intermittent internet connections causing problems with Office 365 activation?

I use it on a laptop which is on occasion disconnected, but I've never had a problem.

Not yet and because of Sod's Law I don't intend to be one of the first unlucky people to find out the hard way.

I'm able to use 365 even when not connected to the internet and haven't thus far had any problems.

It would only be an issue if the internet connection problems occurred when Office wanted to check its subscription status. There could be a period of time before getting back online when office is in read only mode when the account status is unverified. It is reasonably unlikely to happen.

Or perhaps it will stay in read-write mode and simply try again later...

It doesn't. That would defeat the point of checking the subscription status. I have Office 365 on my laptop. I went long enough without using it for it to want to check its status. When I next ran it I had Wi-Fi turned off and it couldn't check. It went into read only mode which was fixed by turning on the Wi-Fi and letting it check.

I have enough problems when I lose my internet connection, that I don't see the wisdom of adding on top of that an inability to edit stuff offline.
