Things we 'think' we can't manage without

I know one thing that I would lost with out is my cast iron ceiling airer.
Has saved me a bomb in drying clothes. I do have a little tumble dryer but use that to finish airing off as I have no airing cupboard. So is only on 5/10 mins rather than hours.
Most other things I can leave. Like TV not got one. Computer So be it. Don't run a car at the moment can't afford it. But hubby has one.
So I am simple little soul.
I suppose another thing I could not live with out is my hobbies of cross stich and card making.
Yours

I would really like:
Freezer. Oven.
I really need to keep:
Mobile (no landline), fridge, hobs. Calculator (if no computer).
I would find it hard without:
Kettle, computer & printer, internet, electric can opener, lamps, microwave.
I could manage without:
Radio. Alarm clock. Hand blender. Camera.0 -

Anyone else and I'd have said use your brain, or failing that fingers and toes, but I know how complicated scientific calculations can get, so you're let off on that one"An Ye Harm None, Do What Ye Will"

I've never been a tele addict and even watch much less since the internet and this site, I'd rather be on here in touch with real entertaining people than watch the rubbish that passes for ntertainment on the box.
I wonder if less tele watching in general is due to the internet or are more and more people dissillusioned with what's on offer or maybe this should be a different thread.
Hi Needmoney - I'm one of those non-telly watcher types too. I moved into a new house with no aerial about a year ago, and decided to try life without. It's been wonderful - haven't decorated yet but I have read lots of books! I've also done bits of voluntary work and what have you too. At work I hear people talk about the plots of Desperate Housewives, Holby City, Footballers Wives etc etc...my colleagues get so excited about these programs but to my ears they all sound like complete brain rotting rubbish. Something called Celeb Love Island started recently...oh big yawn! I believe I am missing Eurovision tonight... I think telly watching is simply a habit but for some reason many people can't think of anything else to do of an evening.0 -

Why thank you0 -
I really would hate to be without my pressure cookers! Stews and casseroles cooked in 40 mins. Hams boiled. I've never cooked potatoes or veg in a saucepan. The idea of cooking pots and and 4 different veg in separate pans makes me feel vaguely anxious - like spinning too many plates at once!
I only got my dishwasher a year ago, and would hate to be without it. I manage to only use it every one and a half days or so - but I can't stand the thought of really dirty dishes hanging around for long so everything is well rinsed before it goes in! I only ever use the 40 min wash programme and still wash the really big, mucky pans by hand. I figure they would take up too much room and require the full wash programme, so hand washing them is more economical.
I've had a tumble-dryer for over 20 years (well, 3 tumble-dryers in 20 years) and couldn't imagine washing for a family of 5 (including a builder husband) and drying stuff indoors in the winter. Just think of the condensation!
Love my liquidiser, for homemade soups and sauces.
Mobile phone is indispensible when keeping tabs on 3 teenagers.
Microwave is sorely underused. Great heap of metal used to cook jacket pots, heat beans and make porridge/custard/poached eggs! It could be used as a conventional oven but gets really burnt-on yuck when used to roast chicken etc.
Rarely used, but like to keep - food mixer, smoothie maker, sandwich toaster, coffee maker."Cheap", "Fast", "Right" -- pick two.0 -
One thing I don't really need but which I'd really like is a food processor that can slice veggies and stuff. I do find that very hard because of my wrist and I am seriously considering getting one. (It's my birthday next week and my parents dont know what to buy me... I'm sure they'd love to get me a nice sensible food processor, or they could give me their old one and buy a new one for them..)0

Hi SnowyOwl guess what I did last night....yep....watched tele!!:D
Winston Churchill and the Story of Mowtown. Was really too tired to do anything else.
And yes I'd catch a bit of conversation that I'd think was a bit of scandalous gossip only to find out they were talking about some soap.:rolleyes:Women and cats will do as they please and men and dogs should get used to it.;)

Common 'must haves' I do without:
Car (live in London so get by with walking, cycling, public transport, taxis and hire cars)
Automatic washing machine/tumble dryer (I have a little counter top washer and a seperate spin dryer)
Oven (I do everything in the microwave/grill
Power shower (£4.99 tap attachment from Argos works fine)
Stuff I would have a hard time without
Lawn mower (would have to use a scythe or pay someone to mow it)
Telephone (would have to use a callbox and look at pictures of prossies while standing in a pool of pee)
Computer (would have to use work one or use public library/internet caff)'Never keep up with Joneses. Drag them down to your level. It's cheaper.' Quentin Crisp0
