Somewhere outside for a washing line, even if it's only a balcony

We lived in flats at one point and my friends mum used a caravan airer to hang her washing out of the window. We used to use the balcony and often ended up with musty clothes as there was not really enough air circulation when it was not sunny.0 -

Oh, thats a good idea Culpepper, I have some of those windows which would create a canopy over a caravan airer if it was raining! Off to look for caravan airers now.............;)
EDIT : Found these if anyone else is interested :

Unfortunately that's against the terms of the lease. It's a conservation area and I think if I tried that with the windows facing the street the NIMBYs would complain!
Thanks for the tip though, I'll be moving soon so I'll bear it in mind.0 -
Things I have and could do without with not much suffering:
Guitar (my son plays mine but I don't get to play at all!), hoover (don't remember last time I used it as we have wooden floors everywhere but it will come handy now that I will have a runner on the stairs and landings!), breadmaker (kids whinge that the bread is not the same as shop-bought so not much in use), food processor (handy but not indispensable), TV (except for watching Holby but I could just about survive without it I think!), tumble drier (not used in ages, only the kids use it when they forget to wash their school things on Friday and have to wash and dry them first thing in the morning on Mondays!), bicycle (sitting in the spare room covered in dust, am I going to repair it or am I going to sell it?) .
Things I need but could find alternatives if I really was pushed:
Washing machine (nobody ever died of hand-washing!), freezer (could cook from scratch every day instead of being tempted by pre-cooked rubbish!), bathtub (love showers anyway), stereo hi-fi (could use the small portable instead), mobile phone (I use it only when on call for births, otherwise it stays switched off and at home - saves me a fortune!).
Things I don't have and don't miss:
Car (had one for many years and when it died we decided to be car-less, and never looked back - much to our kids' disgust!), microwave oven (had one for a few weeks that someone had given us but we didn't use it hardly at all and it was taking too much space so we gave it away), lots of gadgets (what you don't know, you don't miss).
Things I could not live without:
Cooker (I love cooking and eating too much to live without a cooker!), fridge (allows me to save and reuse leftovers, has paid for itself many times over!), shower (my de-stress solution), and of course, last but not least.......computer with internet connection (to speak with you my friends!).
CaterinaFinally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).0 -
cant manage without surfiong and browsing and posting on MSE.com
i dont know bout anyone else, but, the 'word association game is very addictive on here. and the amount of £££ you can save, its crazy!0 -
The thing that's surprised me most about these replies is that some either have no tele or could easily live without one. I've never been a tele addict and even watch much less since the internet and this site, I'd rather be on here in touch with real entertaining people than watch the rubbish that passes for ntertainment on the box.
I wonder if less tele watching in general is due to the internet or are more and more people dissillusioned with what's on offer or maybe this should be a different thread.Women and cats will do as they please and men and dogs should get used to it.;)

I don't watch anywhere near the amount of tv I used to and often go 2-3 days without switching it on, especially over the weekend when DS isn't here. Even when it's on I'm rarely paying much attention, unless it's a really good drama or film I specifically want to watch and need to pay attention to, as I'm usually on the PC while it's on LOL!
It does help that us women are good at multi-tasking though and I only run into problems while trying to read here, listen to tv and have DS yapping in my ear 'ole at the same time :rotfl:"An Ye Harm None, Do What Ye Will"

As long as I have my radios and my PC I'm happy. I love all my gadgets apart from the TV, never watch it, never have done.
When I first got married we had a fridge, a cooker and a kettle. Then someone gave me a washing machine, one of those with a wringer, which I sold for £5 three years later. I was a good money saver way back in the 60's.0 -
My family is amazed that I can be on this site and then not bother to come through to watch t.v. when a favourite serial is on !"This site is addictive!"

My parents didn't even own a VCR until a few years ago, after they'd amassed a collection of family videos from various relatives but couldn't watch them LOL!
Any films they wanted to see they'd just wait until they were screened on terrestrial tv!"An Ye Harm None, Do What Ye Will"
