I particularly do not like this exclusion where they will not cover, "The cost of recovering the vehicle and its passengers if the vehicle can be repaired within a reasonable period of time at or near the place where it has broken-down."
I think if you read the small print of all the breakdown services, you would find various exclusions. The above, for example, is the way I would expect any service to work, it's common sense not to lug it miles if you can repair it on the spot.

I was out shopping in the local shopping centre today, at one end was an RAC stall and the other was AA, so I enquired at the RAC one as it was just there, but the guy was quick to slag off AA and make out he was better straight away, talking about how they only offer £500 extra repair coverage, and went onto talk about how the RAC offer £750 I think it was, but it doesn't cover general wear and tear, so I questioned him about that, asking if I was to make a claim, would the RAC just argue it was wear and tear and then I've lost money? Well he couldn't answer me properly on that one so I was a little put off by their service.

However, I noticed the AA stall further up so I talked to the guy, he didn't for one minute slag off RAC, he was pushy in making a sale but was also understandable when I told him I wasn't in the best place financially to pay for it just yet. But he told me I am covered against wear and tear as well as mechanical failure. So I'd rather be covered for less amount of money, but be covered for more if that's the case. So I think I've decided to go with the AA

I see Which? have someone called Start Rescue well clear at the top of their ratings, with 86% customer score, with 93% arriving within the hour. Saga Breakdown were a quite good second. AA was 4th and RAC 8th out of 13.
  • I tend to alternate each year between RAC, AA and Green Flag. That way you can get new customer rates and can also shop around to get the best cashback offer on quidco or topcashback. Most years I've paid much less than £50 after csahback and offers for the higher levels of cover.
