I find that to join any of the main 2 is very good but never renew, make sure you cancel the re-newel in due time and leave it expired for one day and then sign up again as a new customer, this gives you a new customer discount, silly but true.

'Please understand that contract documents, form, terms & conditions and any other notices and information will generally be provided in German.' No thanks - anyway, it's not even cheap!

The answer, as always on MSE, is to look for the MSE recommendation here - http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/car-insurance/breakdown-cover

    er, it's MEGA cheap.
Wife and I are covered anywhere in the EU and some non-EU countries as well, for car or motorhome, and also for towing a trailer with either, for about 90 Euros a year.
The RAC Recovery family cover had crept up to almost £250 p.a.
The questions that get the best answers are the questions that give most detail....

The original docs being in German makes no difference at all - every ADAC person I've spoken too either speaks perfect English or gets me one that does in a matter of moments.

And it is INCREDIBLY cheap - my wife and I are covered worldwide for €109 - for a level of cover which neither the AA nor RAC can provide at any price.

I left the AA when their fees topped £200 - I wish i'd left them years before.

The ADAC does everything for the benefit of it's members - not it's shareholders.

i have the barclays RAC cover and i get unlimited callouts including homestart but i think thats about it

it also covers me rather than a specific vehicle.

However the Barclays cover i have is an account benefit which i dont think is the same as a "travel pack" you mention

I'm not too sure, there's a travel pack and a travel pack plus with Barclays, offers worldwide travel insurance and breakdown cover. I asked the lady in branch how many call outs I would be eligible for the year, she said it would be unlimited, but she handed me a brochure and when reading it, it said I was allowed five a year. It sounds very much like what you get, though maybe they are two different services

Neither. Both are run by venture capitalists these days and nothing like they used to be when they were run by motoring enthusiasts. As above, you're better off with Autoaid, Green Flag or any of the others, imho.

I've checked out Green Flag too but I checked out a pretty popular review on here, where a guy reviewed AA, RAC and Green Flag, and Green Flag couldn't even diagnose the issue. AA and RAC fixed it for him straight away. He voted each three out of 100 points, he gave the RAC around two points more than the AA but said they were very good and very similar

I would agree - they are both very good - just far too expensive, especially if you include European breakdown assistance

That's why I joined the ADAC for worldwide cover.

If I break down in the UK one quick phone call to an English speaking call-centre and the ADAC contacts the AA who then turn out to give me better service than if I was an AA member.

Some thing happens whichever country I'm in - I get the local main motor clubs assistance - only in Germany do I actually get help from the ADAC for a roadside breakdown.

But if I fall ill on holiday for example, in any country in the world, the ADAC will fly me and my family home in one of their ADAC air ambulance jets.
  • Start rescue was about £30 for me and that includes homestart. I've had to call them once and it took them 2 hours to come out but the call centre were very apologetic and I was satisfied with the service.

Over the last few years, I've generally paid about half that, also for European cover, including recovery, home start etc. It used to be with Green Insurance (not Green Flag), now owned by Kwik Fit. Currently with CBC at £49.45.
