Personal debts to friends and family

  • I've already contacted Revenue to get that sorted too :)

How do tax credits work if you only start working in the state at the end of the year?
  • Late to the party again...

Do I understand correctly that the combined €2,650 of debt owed to your three friends, plus that bit to Littlewoods doesn't comprise your total debts, but you also owe family, too? If so, especially if your work situation is unstable, you might soon need them, so... have you thought about putting together a plan to repay them as well?

    Whatever happens, a suggestion:
Following other people's suggestions, there's a fair amount that can be cut from your monthly spending. Your current contract may end in only 12 weeks so you should view your situation as a short-term emergency and take action accordingly.

In that situation, what I would do is:
    i) chop €150 from the grocery budget (learn to love instant noodles), buy no presents, have no hair cuts, buy no clothes and wear that pigeon poop with pride, and do nothing entertaining whatsoever. Put it all into your emergency fund.
ii) that's right. Make your emergency fund €400 per month.
iii) in 12 weeks time, you'll have €1200
iv) in the same 12 weeks, you'll have paid your friends back €1800
    v) at that point, you will either lose your job, in which case you have €1200 to fall back on, or you will keep your job, in which case you can pay your friends off lump-sum (barring about €65, which will get cleared next payday)

That will also have the effect of completely removing you from social situations where your friends can make snarky comments and makes it look more obviously like you're trying to get back on track.

:T:T:T Everything SPL says - seriously OP - read, take note, and implement. (And start looking for another job now, also - it will pay to know at least what's out there in your field. At the end of 12 weeks if you find yourself with no contract, you have to be willing to do whatever work you can find in the short term - if that's sweeping floors, serving drinks or flipping burgers, so be it.)

Sorry to hear that your contract might be terminated after 12 weeks.

Like the others have said you need to go into "crisis mode"

This means absolutely no spending on non essentials. Try and pay a chunk off your debts and set something aside.

Look for a second job to support your day time job. It's coming up to Christmas you might be able to get some seasonal work, bars, restaurants whatever.

And start casting your net for another day job,

Sorry it's so rough for you but don't give up. Your back is against the wall now so you need to come out fighting.

One day you will look back and be able to smile and congratulate yourself on having ridden out the storm, but only if you take drastic serious action NOW.

Live like a hermit for a while and take any work that comes your way, no matter how menial or soul destroying.

I have done some lousy jobs when I had too, waitressing, cold calling trying to flog life insurance (that was the real low:rotfl:) but I just gritted my teeth and did it.

It paid off though, I survived and lived to tell the tale. :D

Yep, washing plates, cold calling trying to sell double glazing, cleaning a school and picking up horse droppings from a field (yes, someone paid me to de-poop their field).

Can't your Mother get a part time job? I have always had at least a part time job all through school (it was riding horses so not subject to government advice!), college and university. You can't afford to sub her either.
  • Hey guys

Sorry to dig this up. Today was supposed to be payday one according to the Promissory note. As said earlier in the threat, I only recently started this role and won't be paid until later in the month. I just got a message saying 'you need to make a payment today' and, I know it sounds weird, but I'm just completely frozen when trying to type a response. I haven't even marked the message as read.

I know it sounds immature but, I hope you understand.

Personally, I am still of the opinion that you need to get correspondence on this off texts, and onto paper.

  • It's a bit difficult as they're not in a place where it would take a short time to send a letter to.

    I do understand.

However, as scary as it is, I really think your best plan of action is at least communicating with your friend. Silence is only going to make them think the worst (i.e., that you'll never pay back the money).

Get in touch. Explain that you haven't forgotten what you owe, but you won't be paid until later in the month.

    Best wishes.
