15Kg butane gas bottle PRICES !

Hello - there has always been a thread about the 47 Kg bottle price,

I am trying to establish what is a good price for the smaller size used for BBQ's etc, in my case, I wish to run a dual gas hob in the kitchen of my all - electric house, it HAS to be cheaper than daytime E7 rates..... ?

I paid £30 for my last bottle, from a camping site, the local garage does not sell 15 Kg bottles, but want £28 for a 12Kg bottle....

answers please, on a postcard, to MSE :D thankyou !

We have a six burner gas hob and a 13kg propane cylinder lasts us around 12 to 18 months.

I'm surprised that you use butane as it doesn't normally work too well in the winter.

well, all my bottles are BLUE ! one in a De Longhi Blue Flame portable heater, that I was given, used to be used in a static caravan,
another in a BBQ, also blue butane bottle, and I am planning on hooking up a dual gas camping hob in the kitchen, so have bought a bottle of butane for that...
Should I be using Propane then ?
    Is it (any) cheaper ??

Butane doesn't work when the temperature is below about 5 degrees, so if you are intending to store or keep the cylinders outside in the winter then you'll need Propane. Thats why you dont see butane on building sites. Generally you can get propane in larger cylinders which can work out significantly cheaper per kg than butane. If you go down to the smaller sizes then they are very expensive per/kg, well over £3/kg

If you are going to use the gas from the cylinder indoors then butane is probably OK.

I'd doubt very much whether butane or propane is much cheaper than leccy unless your's is very expensive.

Both Butane & Propane give out just over 13.5kwh per kg, so a 12kg cylinder for £28 will cost 28/12 =£2.33/kg = 2.33/13.5 = over 17p per kwh. Even 15kg for £30 will cost nearly 15p/kwh plus you've got the aggro of storing and getting the cylinders refilled.

Look here and click on the cylinder to see how much it costs and then work out if your leccy is cheaper per kwh https://www.calor.co.uk/gas-bottles/buying-gas-bottles/which-gas-bottle

The colour of the cylinders isn't really relevant, it's whats in them and what sort of fitting or regulator that you've got.

Butane is generally 28mBar and propane is 37mBar and a butane regulator won't fit a propane cylinder and neither will a propane one fit a butane cylinder. Most appliances will work from either providing the correct regulator is used
