Hi,
we are insulating our loft and we have rock wool between joists. we would like to cover this with a material but not plasterboard as I am looking something not heavy, easy to install, diy so I can do myself and just paint. It is a pitched roof. any suggestions are welcome.
thanks

If you have insulated between the joists, then the only real answer is 19mm chipboard - This is assuming you mean the horizontal timbers that hold up the ceiling in the room(s) below.
If you are referring to the timbers that the roof tiles are attached to (by way of battens), these are called Rafters - A relatively lightweight material that you could use would be woodwool boards. These can be painted, are vapour permeable (dependent on the paint used), and have the added advantage in providing an extra layer of insulation.
Think carefully about insulating between the rafters - The last thing you want is interstitial condensation being trapped in there and rotting the timbers out.Her courage will change the world.
Treasure the moments that you have. Savour them for as long as you can for they will never come back again.0 -
I guess you could take 9mm plasterboard which is less heavy than 12mm? there are smaller sheets of it as well for sale if you can't cut it up yourself... 1.8mx0.9m called handiboard, about 30% more expensive per square meter than the regular stuff.
fitting a 2.4x1.2m sheet by 1 person to ceiling is a bit of a hassle, but have it done countless of times,so not impossible...0 -
Hi,
I am talking about the actual roof not the ceiling above the floor downstairs. Basically, previous owner has insulated between rafter with rockwool - it does not look like old. and then closed with some kind of board which seems bending and not perfectly done. I opened 2 of them today, it seems not rotted rafter, no condensation, treated read oaked old rafters.
I want to keep the rock wool there as it is. they look very good no problems at all. But i want to change boarding. preferably not plasterboard. Something really light, easy to install, and maintain.

sounds like a plasterboard is what you are after!0

plasterboards are heavy. I am looking something really light. Rafters are 35 cm centered.0

Plasterboard may seem heavy to you, but it is lighter than most things the same size/strength. That is why it is used for that purpose.
If you want to bodge it, just use 3mm MDF sheet or something.0 -
what about ceiling tiles which are used by companies. I have seen some using on the walls easy to put and remove if needed.0

you can buy small sheets or half sheets of plasterboard - I wouldn't use anything else, or at least, nothing thats easier to handle than plasterboardThis is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0
