Kid accidently smashed rear windscreen

  • Phone up a few local companies that will replace the window. Ensure they know it's a private job. It's not unknown that they massage up prices for insurance jobs.

If it comes in under £200, it's probably better to pay it yourself. Most policies have an excess you'll have to pay to have the window replaced.

Read your policy documents regarding glass claims. A few years ago Swiftcover stated they would not view this as a claim but would also not give ncb for that year.

A friend had a windscreen replaced by an independant company which from memory cost £170 and about 10 years ago had a rear screen replaced by an independent who used a second hand screen. This cost about £90.

Phone local companies to find the cost.

Damage the kids bike. See how he likes it.

I got a front windscreen replaced on a similar sized car for £145 from a local person. The rear one will be slightly more due to the heater elements in it but not much.

I rang up Autoglass just to see how much they would charge and it was over £600!.

If you claim through insurance it will be about a £75 excess and some insurers will make you "loose" a years NCD and it won't increase at the end of the year. But if you have more than 5 years it won't make much difference to next year's insurance prices anyway. Plus when I did a dummy quote the glass claim make no difference at all to my premium.

Assuming your policy with Octagon is has the same details as I found online, a windscreen claim will NOT affect your NCD (link), as is the case with most insurers.

You will still have to declare the glass claim when you get quotes next year and this may or may not have an impact on your premium - anecdotally it usually has little effect but you can check by doing a couple of dummy quotes on a price comparison site.

The excess seems to be £60 if you use their recommended repairer (Autoglass) or £100 if you use someone else (link).
