The ticket purchased from The Trainline was not. Therefore any refund should come from this original company.
If it were the original retailer's fault the OP was unable to use the pre-booked ticket, I'd agree...In this case, however, I would suggest that any refund would purely be a gesture of goodwill on the part of the TOC selling the new ticket as it would be that, generally higher, fare that you want to be refunded. Though the point is, as you say, moot due to the original ticket having been disposed of.
YMMV, of course.0 -

If you went to the supermarket and bought some bread, then lost the bread on the way home. Do you think the supermarket would let you have some more?
If you went to the cinema, purchased a ticket, then lost it before going through, do you think they would accept a reciept?
Perhaps you purchased a bus ticket at the bus station. Then lost it during the day. Do you think the bus driver would accept a reciept?
Perhaps you purchased a TV from Currys and it was stolen on the way home. Do you think Currys would give you another one?
It's tough but that's just hard luck.
What industry do you work in? I will try and translate into something you may understand if the above didn't work.0 -
I agree that the place to plead the cause is with the vendor of the unused ticket, i.e. Trainline, so I looked up the postal address to help the OP. Like others I do not think that there is much hope. In my successful refund case, where I had the unused ticket to send in, I first went to the web site from which I purchased the ticket, namely Greater Anglia, submitted a refund request, printed off the reference number, and posted it in with the ticket. Trainline act as the issuing agent for Greater Anglia. Of course I also was stung with the £10 admin fee, hence only getting £6 back for a £16 unused ticket!0
