I've just received the log book for the car I bought from a private seller but it's showing a different name and address to the person I bought it from so should I be worried about anything.

How long had they owned it? Are you sure it was a private seller and not a trader masquerading as private? Did you ask why there was an anomaly before buying it?0

Possibly, but the time to worry about that was before you bought the car.
First thing you check is whether it's the seller's to sell, and if their name isn't on the V5 that'd be well worth questioning (yes, I know V5 does not imply ownership, but it would prompt me to ask for an explanation).0 -
When I received the log book I did wonder if they was a trader and not a private seller. I'm not sure how long they owned the car but it wasn't taxed for 2 months and it didn't have any insurance. I don't know what anomaly means. How long had they owned it? Are you sure it was a private seller and not a trader masquerading as private? Did you ask why there was an anomaly before buying it?0 -
Something out of place, a mismatch.samsung_laptop wrote: »I don't know what anomaly means.
The first time I bought a car privately (before the WWW) - I found exactly that situation and was worried for a bit. Nothing ever came of it.I need to think of something new here...0 -
Could have been selling for a friend/relative.
Or was a home trader.
It could be a big problem or no problem at all. If address on V5 is local call round and ask why their name is on a V5 of a car you bought from someone else.0 -
If you've got the V5 in your name now, I'd say the risk of something coming back is minimal and not worth worrying about.0

I did wonder if they was selling the car for someone else but wouldn't they have said. I live about 17 miles away from the person on the log book.Could have been selling for a friend/relative.

Personally I would call them up again and find out why. It's probably fine, but just to put your mind at rest.0

They wouldn't say if you don't ask. Unfortunately the time to ask is before you buy. It may be nothing or it may be a dealer trying to sell privately to evade any responsibility. In that instance they certainly wouldn't volunteer that they were not the owner.Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.0 -
Yeah if it's local I'd go and ask, more than likely they've traded it in and the dealer never updated and has pretended to be private. If you'd done an HPI it's not been recorded as stolen.
They'll probably be able to tell you a lot more about it's history and flaws, too
