I'm on maternity leave as Iv had a baby. Iv applied for child benefit but this was 6 months ago! My baby is now 7 months old!
Iv been told by child benefit that my number is been used by someone else. They have the same number as me and because they started claiming child tax credits in 2013 then I need a new one..... I've been waiting months for an appointment and no one I call can help me.
What about all the tax Iv paid since being 16??? Iv worked all my life, I'm now 27??
I need to complain but I just don't know who to? Or how to go about it. What if this other person has never worked? What about all the n.i Iv paid and also I'm 6 months on and haven't seen a penny of child
Benefit. Please help... this is my first post so I apologise if it's posted in the wrong place.

HMRC have an NI investigation team who will sort out who is who with the National Insurance and correct the records.
It's not uncommon for people to have been using an incorrect NI number - if no one's pointed out to them then they may never realise. It may simply be that for some reason you have been using the wrong number.
Give HMRC a call - https://www.gov.uk/government/organisations/hm-revenue-customs/contact/national-insurance-enquiries-for-employees-and-individuals
CraigI no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.0 -

If you scroll down to find the post for the account investigation team, you need to call them. They need to work out who the NI belongs to, you or the other person. It maybe that you have been using the wrong national insurance number and they need to trace the correct one and reallocate your contributions. Unfortunately it is not a quick process0 -
Who are you waiting for an appointment with?
Have you got your National Insurance card confirming that you have been using the correct number?
Have you contacted the National Insurance helplines?

You can contact them by webchat0 -
I'm waiting for an appiontment to get a new number as child benefit have told me they have referred everything on as as this other person claimed in 2013 because they have claimed first, this means that it's now their number and not mine. I have a plastic card printed with my name and N.I number on it, obviously it's on all of my payslips and work documents. Iv been waiting a few months for the appointment for a new number and when I call the head office to try and arrange one as no letter seems to be arriving they tell me unless I'm an immigrant or I'm out of work then they can't help me! But thank you all, I will try the numbers you have provided0

This used to be extremely rare but I have heard of it a few times. My knowledge is years out of date but there used to be the National Insurance Records Office, located in Longbenton, Newcastle upon Tyne. If it is no longer in existence, it must have been replaced by something.
A quick google produced this:

With any luck, it will at least give you a starting point, in case the links already offered do not avail. HTH.0 -

Take no notice of what Child Benefit say about the other person 'owning' the number because they claimed CB first. The only people who will make that decision are HMRC.0 -

An appointment with whom?
Have you tried writing to your MP or visiting his surgery?0 -
It's very easy for NINOs to get mismatched (typos, someone genuinely getting it wrong or someone hijacking your identity) but it doesn't mean that this person now owns yours.
Tax credits have a team that deal with these cases so I'm surprised child benefit don't.0 -

When I worked for DWP, any issues like this which came across our desks were referred to a specialist team. If they couldn't resolve it they sent it on to HMRC. In most cases things were resolved within a few weeks.0 -
It's not correct that they keep the Nino. It was allocated to someone (either you or then) years ago and that's who it stays with0
