Proof of value for missing eBay item - Royal Mail Claim

Hi everyone,
I sold an item which the buyer said didn’t arrive. I asked to check neighbours, wait a few days etc, which she did, but no parcel so I refunded her – approx. £9 + £2.85 postage.

I posted standard 2nd class as my understanding was that you can claim the value of the item off Royal Mail if the value is under £20 and parcel gets lost. As it is, I was looking into the claim process (it’s my 1st time, in the past when this has happened, I’ve either let it go or intended to claim but not got round to it) and I found a thread on eBay saying RM won’t accept proof of an eBay sale as proof of value of the item. Is this correct? The thread was from 2012 and I’ve searched here and on ebay for something more recent and can’t find anything. Can anyone clarify this for me or send me in the right direction please?

On another note, about 5/6 months back, I had another buyer claim item not received. I was suspicious as she had left huge amounts of neg feedback for other sellers saying same thing. In fact someone had replied to her neg fb saying he’d gone through and she’d left something like 100 neg/neutral fb for items not arrived/not as described out of 500 feedback. This latest missing item got us talking about that, so we looked at her account and can see she sold the alleged missing items she bought from me as part of a bundle just a couple of weeks ago! As it was over 90 days ago I can’t use report buyer option, is there any other way of reporting this?

    Evidence of value includes but is not limited to original receipts, invoices, Paypal records, manufacturing costs, auctioneers valuation and repair costs in the case of damage claims.

    In addition to the above, eBay claims must be accompanied by


    the item sale page and Paypal or bank/credit card statement


    eBay item number (please provide this in section 7)

    If you are a business (registered or not) then you can only claim for what the item cost you to buy, not what you sold it for.

    I hardly use Royal Mail for my business anymore. I did have to put in a claim for a personal item that went missing. I included the Ebay listing sold page and although they said it should be sent by signed for to prove delivery they said they'd on this occasion refund me.

    There are plenty of courier brokers such as parcel2go.com which will allow you to send items tracked, often cheaper than Royal Mail. Or try MyHermes directly. Even if you just use them for buyers who you are suspicious of.

    As for the person who claimed non delivery, I would just forget about them and move on. You could always add them to your blocked list so you do not have to deal with them again.

    Thank you for your quick reply. I'm just a personal seller, so I will still give the claim a try. Looking at the eBay page I was viewing before, I get the impression they are business sellers, so perhaps that's where I'm getting confused.
