This is an “over the garden fence” type thread where we chat about everything Old Style and maybe a little bit more. It’s a great, inspiring and motivating thread we start each day to discuss what Old Style things we’re going to do today or what we’ve achieved already. Everyone’s welcome, please do come in, put your feet up (although check the fence hasn’t just been painted first!) and join us for an Old Style natter. The more the merrier!

As this is the Old Style Board, it would be appreciated if posts could include some Old Style content. Please be aware that many people may have small screens, or SLOW internet connections, so please don’t post large pictures, or clip art – links are preferred. When you make a post, if you feel like giving it a title, that will help others that don’t have the time to read everything skim through the thread quickly but if not it's not a problem. Please do not start a new daily thread before you go to bed at night because this often leaves things confusing with two daily threads live at the same time. The idea is that a member would start each new daily thread after they get up in the morning.

Some people who chat here like to try to answer everyone. Don’t feel you have to though, a general “hi everyone, hope everyone’s well” is fine.

    Morning all.

Busy day yesterday with the visitors. Very nice people though there's only so much talking, listening and thinking in German I can do at a time. They must surely feel the same about English so I ducked out of dinner and left them to it.

Today I'm taking them ( minus Mum ) up to Inverary Castle and back down via the Hill House in Helensburgh. The castle is more than halfway home for me but they will really enjoy it. As for Hill House, it's my pleasuredome really. Any excuse. The younger of the visitors is working in fashion and design and is keen to see the most complete design by Charles Rennie Mackintosh. He designed everything in the house, carpets, cutlery, furniture, curtains etc and the house itself.

I'm just having a few moments of peace.

Lainey - never worry about us all here. Virtual friends are great and support you through thick and thin. You are going through a tough time with an even tougher one ahead - moan away!

Jackie - such lovely news for your family. Congratulations to the happy couple. The other day I came across an old post of yours talking about your pride in your eldest grandson being a soldier.

Maybe a few more minutes under the duvet...

    Happy Saturday everyone.
  • Morning all
Thanks for the thread Gers, I think it's Saturday, well it is here.
Lainey, what the others said, we are all here for you, take care of yourself and Mum.
My DGD has been up since 5am, so she had half an hour of Ben & Holly before we made biscuits.
I'm probably looking after her sister from 10 ish and tomorrow we are going to see DD1 and her children.
My L&M has to have a 24 hour ECG monitor fitted so we are waiting for an appointment letter to arrive now.
    Have a good day everyone.
    Hugs Hester
    Chin up, Titus out.
  • Morning folks and thanks for the thread GERS. Inverary has been in my thoughts a lot this week! DB and SIL popped by after their Scottish holiday last week - they spent the first 3 nights in Inverary, before moving on to Mull. Then yesterday the change of weather prompted me to get out the wool duffel jacket I had bought at the Mill Shop there. Looking a bit shabby now but still warm and snug! Thirdly I had a text from a friend that I met up with whilst walking up to the castle there, after not seeing each other for 50 years! We now keep in touch better!

After a run of hectic mornings this morning feels lovely and peaceful. No DGDs sleeping over and DS went to work silly early, Mr TA is still tucked up in bed. Now on my second coffee of the day and making the most of it!

We have sun forecast so I am getting most of the bedding mountain washed and pegged outside. A bit of wind would dry it all a bit quicker but we can't have everything!

Have a good day and (((HUGS))) to all in need. Especially LAINEY and her DM. Wonderful news for you JACKIE and what a lovely day for a wedding. Take care all xxx

Changed back to the correct day! Thanks HH. Brain fog!

That's very strange TA. Inverary is a lovely wee place. I shall let my visitors explore the castle whilst I will wait in the tea room.

    Morning everyone

Gers - thanks for starting us off x

Hugs to those that want/need them x

Happy birthday to those with a birthday x

DH up and gone into work to help them out, as they were desperate for an extra pair of hands today - he shouldn't be too long, and I'm working this morning too, so it hasn't messed up any plans. Both boys still in their pits.

Now light, dry underfoot very cloudy and overcast though. Menfolk were moaning yesterday afternoon/evening it was cold, so we had the gas fire on for half an hour - it just took the chill off. There's no way I'm putting the heating on yet, unless the temperature really drops.

Dinner last night was chicken and ham kievs, chips and beans for the menfolk, I had jacket potato with tuna mayo and salad. Tonight we'll be having LO gammon, hot quiche, scotch eggs, salad and jacket potato.

I was more productive yesterday, after going to the SM early I then visited a new retail store that has been revamped and re-launched this week, and it's one of the big cheap chain stores and the prices on some items are very competitive, I also did find 2017 diaries in there, both DH and myself have a desk diary for home, I use my for GC and any other things I need to make a note of, his is generally for caravanning stuff, when he held position but he's now become more involved again as they were struggling and he was asked to go back and help. I'm pleased as it gives him a hobby. I was a busy bee yesterday afternoon, I took a fancy to making a carrot cake, so purchased the ingredients and made said cake, a tea loaf, chocolate chip cookies and tiffin. Carrot cake has lovely flavour, but it's rather heavy - certainly wouldn't win any prizes on GBBO! - but DH ate 2 portions last night so it can't be that bad! I don't have a sieve - so didn't sieve the flour and mixed it with a hand mixer not by hand - think I was just not gentle enough with the mixture, will try something different next time.

    Keep safe and well x

    Good morning everyone

I'm so excited, it's my sister's 40th birthday party tonight and it's an 80's theme so I have neon pink crochet gloves, neon beads, a pair of bright pink enormous hoop earrings, electric blue eyeliner and bright pink lippy to wear. Some of the people going have got full costumes to wear and the music is going to be fantastic. I can't wait, DD15 is going to dye my hair to get rid of the greys and I plan to relive my youth :dance::dance:.

I'm the only one up so far so I have fed the pets and let them out for a wee. It's a bit chilly with the back door open but I haven't felt the need to put the heating on yet. It's good being a terraced house as my neighbours either side are older so have the heating on full blast and we get the benefit :money:.

I have shopping coming in a little while. I have ordered a load of low GI foods to try and make meals with. I bought the how to do it book and a couple of recipe books too. I am looking forward to it but the girls are sad that I am not buying any more cakes and biscuits. I don't mind if they want to make them though as I am not that mean. I much prefer they ate home made anyway as I can see how much sugar is in them.

Right, I'm off to make my first cup of tea of the day. Hope you all have a great weekend, take care xx

    Morning All

A whole week without rain, hooray!! Washing on the line, managed to squeeze mine in between friends 3 loads. Hopefully her flooring will be down soon.

Congrats to your DGS JackieO, what lovely news.
Gosh dumpling, what a change in you! So pleased you are looking forward to the party, hope you enjoy it.
Lainey - Your friends on here will always be supportive, never worry about having a moan.
The tea shop at Inverary Castle is lovely Gers, have fun.

Need to go and buy a stack of cards this morning for various birthdays/sympathy, etc. Then I'll take a run to Costco for a nosey, need to renew my membership, I think my neighbour is coming along too.

Didn't get any paperwork done last night, cut the grass and weeded the driveway instead as it was a lovely evening, it just got dark too early!

Have a great weekend. Take care. XX

Good Morning Chums, up with the larks this morning as I am so pleased at my DGS getting married and my mind is buzzing with thoughts of outfits and a present etc.

It only seems 5 minutes ago he was playing with toys and getting muddy on a football field. Next month he will be 26 and where have those years gone to.He has been with his young lady for four years and I couldn't be happier for them .She is a lovely lass, with her feet planted firmly on the ground and exactly what our gorgeous Danny needs in his life (although he is pretty well grounded as well)

We shall all miss them dreadfully as they are off to live in the U.S. in the New Year as his work takes him there several times a month, but I'm sure they will enjoy their lives together. To see my seven grandchildren grow up to be happy healthy adults is all I asked of my oncologist back in the dark scary days of 2007 and so far all is turning out well.

My eldest DD is chuffed to bits, and a new member of the family Hayley, will be welcomed with open arms.

Today after breakfast I am off to get some food shopping for the first time this month, not a great deal needed but mostly essential stuff, might have a shufti around the shops to see if I see anything I might like to wear on Christmas Eve for the big day :):)
Hope you all have a great day what ever you are doing

    JackieO xx

    Morning everyone,

Had a bit of a lie-in this morning but not too long as Rosie dog has taken to whining if I'm not up by the time she is back from the morning walk!
Gosh, this talk about Inveraray Castle has brought back many happy memories of childhood holidays, my Dad loved, loved Scotland and we went caravanning in the Highlands most years, I remember the beautiful gardens at Inveraray most of all.
Many congratulations JACKIE on the engagement news :)
The partysounds wonderful DUMPLING, I lurve an 80's theme party / music etc, have fun :j

Today will need to be a bit of a catch up as chores have slipped the last couple of days, also need to do some baking as the tins are empty, thinking some scones and flapjack, also have some sausage meat out to make some sausage rolls.

Was hoping to get over and clip Billy this afternoon but depends if it stops raining and his coat is dry, it's still far too warm for him to have a rug on so is still going out naked :)

Anyways, have a good day everyone, take care folks x
  • Congratulations to the young couple JackieO.
