If they are that low now would it be worth having a punt on them, and what would happen if the bank was taken over
Liquidity is when you look at your investment portfolio and **** your pants

 They could become worthless...doing a Marconi....or they could increase in value.... I sold @ a loss - but thats shares for you....its all a gamble. Only invest what you can afford to loose.
I am NOT a Woman! - its Overland Landy (as in A Landrover that travels Overland)

I drive a car that depreciates less in 3 years than my peers cars do in 1 year. I run my Land-rover on Veg oil @53p/L....so being frugal is in my nature.

I was going to pm you BUT!!!

Is there any way you could do us all a favour and provide some more info about motoring life at 53p a litre?? I know I'm way off topic here (so apologies) but perhaps somewhere on a different part of MSE??

We're going to have to change our old faithful motor next year simply because, on our fixed retirement income, there ain't no way we can continue on with an average 25mpg at £1 a litre (sob sob).

So any advice (if you've the time) would be much appreciated!

I'm totally convinced that the Chancellor is in control and isn't putting £22 billion of tax payers' money at risk.

Exactly! If only people had more faith like us. :j

Northern Rock remains as sound an investment as White Star Lines was.

melbury, Granite is a subsidiary of Northern Rock that packages up its outstanding mortgages and uses them in chunks as security (effectively a mortgage) for a loan on the money markets. Northern Rock sells mortgages to it and buys them back as required (for things like further advances or change of mortgage type).

The inability of the Granite part to raise money for Northern Rock by selling the packaged mortgage rights is part of what prompted its crisis.

    James:

A word of appreciation for the great job you're doing here -- half the stuff that goes on is beyond my tired brain, so knowing you're around with explanations that eben a dumbo like me can follow is incredibly reassuring. :T

Just don't desert us all if things get even more complicated than they are now!

A bit off thread - but we are all looking to recover from our losses from NR by saving a bit of £££ I guess!

If you PM me I can send you a few links: Or Google for Veg Oil Conversions
as a brief overview there are a few factors to look at:
The ability to run on Veg Oil is limited by the fuel pump/injector system in Diesel cars (ie they cant all do it).
Your are now legally able to use 2500 litres a year without having to pay tax to HMRC.
You can make your own fuel by using used cooking oil - but this takes a bit of kit, space and time (but it is very Eco cost effective as long as you can get a regular source of the used oil). I have not got to this stage yet...but will do one day I'm sure.

and as a final bit of useless information - Mr Diesel originally designed his engine to run on Peanut oil! As they say - nothing in life is really new:confused:

    A knighthood won't count.

The Prime Minister will only allow meaningful discussions someone who was born in Scotland.

As per every other senior Government appointment (and not so senior, too).

    ;)

    * Mr Branson's address details have been lost anyway.

You can be sure the Gordon will do everything in his power to ensure the small shareholder gets precisely £0. Remember his government sneering at the 'grannies' who owned shares, when they stole Railtrack from it's owners.
