The kettle and toaster were £65 each, which should be decent! Turns out that stuff breaks whatever the price. The quality of stuff at Costco is usually top notch.

I don't use Costco so can't comment on personal experience. But 3 replacements of both toaster and kettle would suggest an issue to me. That said, it's not necessarily the brand you are buying but perhaps the brand is being sourced via a grey import means? As I said, I don't know how Costco works.

1 item failing 3 times would be bad enough but 2 items needing a 3rd replacement?

We started out with a kettle costing around £40 to £50. It was a Russell Hobbs brand. It started leaking from around the switch within a couple of months. I considered this to be highly dangerous so I looked for something else. I spotted the supermarket own brand models which came with a standard 2 year warranty. They are very nice kettles to use and I have to take ergonomics into consideration as I have bad arthritis in my fingers and wrists and elsewhere. The first supermarket kettle lasted nearly 12 months before it started to leak from the switch.... I cannot help but wonder if it due to us being in a hard water area and having scale build up in the little nooks and crannies of the mechanism. It should be built to cope with extreme hard water of course and we do have a little stainless steel descaling ball in there. Anyway, my original post was not about how long a kettle should last or whether a cheap one should be expected to last. If it has a 2 year warranty then it should last for that 2 years and we budgeted accordingly. :)

Thank you all for your input it is very much appreciated.
