Multiple returns of a faulty kettle?

Options
I would like some advice please. Back in 2014 we (my wife & I) purchased a supermarket own brand electric kettle. After a few months the kettle started to leak. We did check that we were not overfilling or carelessly filling the kettle. Ultimately the kettle stopped working as it started to trip the breaker meaning it was obviously dangerous. This kettle was taken back and an exchange accepted. This was fine and was what I had hoped for. However, this happened again..... and again (the original kettle had a stated 2 year warranty). To cut the story short we've had to take another of these replacements back last week. This time I was told that the warranty would only last until December of this year as that would have been when the original warranty would have been up until. Is this correct? I, maybe mistakenly, had thought that the warranty restarted at the date of the replacement. I have this time chosen a different model of kettle so hopefully no leaking.

Nope, it will run from the original date of purchase.

Ok, that's fine. I must have been mistaken. I had thought the law had been changed so that the warranty restarted when a replacement was made. Shame those earlier kettles leaked as they were far better otherwise than the 'double the price' big brand items. They leaked too!!! What is going on with electric kettles nowadays? I've heard of others having the same trouble with them..

Thank you for your help :)

  • Pro tip: If you are a Costco member, buy your kettle/toasters from there. They have a lifetime guarantee and will ALWAYS replace them (even if one breaks, you can return both).

So far, we are onto our 3rd replacement set

    I never said i got a 2 year guarantee .
But you can buy an extended Argos warranty .
Cheap kettles last me about two years at most .
The current run of returned Argos kettles have all failed within twelve months .

Buy from someone who offers one?

I had a 3 year warranty on the one I purchased from aldi (and also on the combi microwave I purchased from there).
You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride

Pro tip number 2. Buy something decent which doesn't need a third replacement. :D
  • I did not think Costco did a lifetime guarantee anymore. Their guarantees are brilliant, but I am fairly sure they don't do lifetime any more.

Most items have lifetime guarantees, but a lot of electronics don't

The kettle and toaster were £65 each, which should be decent! Turns out that stuff breaks whatever the price. The quality of stuff at Costco is usually top notch.
