Landlord never did a Gas Safety Check for 3 years

To keep it short and sweet, just left my last rental property (thank god), and now it's the deposit talks.
So my landlord wants to deduct some ridiculous things off my deposit and the place was spotless when left, got professional cleaners in and everything.
Problem is him and the estate agents are really pushing on me to drop the dispute but I've just realised not once did the landlord or agency do a gas safety check while in the tenancy, I only twigged when a gas safety company called to book one just before I left the property.
Now where do I stand? Do I mention that and demand the full deposit back or am I missing some detail that the landlord isn't responsible for the gas checks?

Your landlord is an idiot, they are resonsible to sort out the safety gas check, mention it, and demand full deposit back, if not go ahead with the dispute.0

1) yes the LL IS responsible
2) but what is the connection between the gas safety and the deposit deductions? (hint - they are inrelated)
3) and what did you do about your safety for 3 years....? Write to the LL? Mention it during inspections? Report it to HE?
Sorry - if the LL is proposing deductions that you think are unfair, then dispute them. That's what the deposit schemes are for.0 -
The gas certificate is unrelated to the deposit
Without having provided you with a valid gas safety certificate he can't legally issue a section 21 notice, but as you have already left the property this is not really relevant.
He could face prosecution for not doing a gas safety check but really this won't help you financially
Just challenge the deposit deductions through the scheme and insist on your full amount back if they are unreasonablepoppy100 -
Look, I understand the deposit is completely unrelated to this gas safety check, but when your landlord has cut corners at the risk of my safety (which is also illegal), i'm not going to be complying that well with his demands every other day.
Essentially, I want to fight fire with fire, as i'm fed up of the estate agent and landlord putting pressure on me.0 -

Nothing, as I knew nothing about it, as it was only my 2nd rental, but Its not my responsibility to remind my landlord.0

News flash.......it is EVERYONES responsibility for Health and Safety, including yours.
Do what has been suggested, dispute the claim, if you want to threaten them or make their lifes a little harder report them to the HSE. They may have a strong word with you by not looking after you and your families health and safety by not following up the lack of gas safety certificates - if it was your own home, would you not have your boiler checked or serviced once a year?0 -
News flash, it's completely the landlords/agency responsibility, as stated on HSE's website.0

"They endangered my safety but I did nothing about it because it wasn't my job"
Typical and it exposes tenants making a big fuss about safety only when it suits them, usually when deposit deductions are discussed.0 -
Not every homeowner has their boiler serviced annually.
OP, rather than trying to blackmail your landlord into returning your deposit just report him to HSE anyway. What if the next tenant is like you and doesn't know that there should be an annual gas safety certificate? Protect their safety by reporting it. I alway recommend that anyone with gas appliances in their home should have CO alarms for their own safety.
As for your deposit just continue using the scheme, that's what it's for.0
