Perhaps they're concerned that a customer could run up an overdraft and then get deported?

Ummmm, I hate to burst your bubble, but if they are new to the UK, with little to no credit history and little to no time on the electoral roll, then they will be unlikely to be accepted for any kind of credit products, even things like contactless debit cards will be out of their reach.

I think you've misunderstood - it's not checking for even illegal migrants, terrorists lists etc that I have the issue with per se.

It's getting banks and other private agencies to become quasi-border police as it's the thin edge of the wedge.
Why should I provide my (UK) passport to an estate agent?

How is checking yo see if someone has the right to be in the UK treating them like criminals? , it's no different to any UK citizen going through an id check, whether that's electronic or by providing documents etc

Why wouldn't you, if that was their criteria for doing business with you ?

Because an estate agent or a bank operative hasn't been trained as a border official. There are all sorts of data protection issues, too, which your average estate agent isn't likely to be familiar with.

We are on tons of databases that banks and others can check our identity against. I really don't need people outside government agencies to have images of my passport.

Because my passport is personal documentation used for travel purposes.
I only provide the details of it to airlines for bookings etc.

So dont do business with them, it's your choice. I'm not trained as a border official but i do have access to a system which checks the validity of any passport or Visa.

As someone who was 'on the fence' in the run-up to the Brexit vote it did strike me that posts on social media which came across as superior and pretentious were the ones from the 'In' camp.

The thread title does nothing to dismiss this theory post vote.
