I have absolutely no idea why the banks would - as meer53 said - would single out non-Brits, or why banks would make themselves policemen, and with what authority they would do so. Especially since we know that some banks, incl the group meer53 works for, have been found to be amongst the largest crooks on earth.

Because they're running a business ? Do you think they should just offer their products to anyone, without checking anything ? They've tried that before, it got them into bother, we're all paying for it now. Hopefully they've learned from their mistakes.

They don't need any authority to do it, if people don't like their processes, they can take their business elsewhere. Same as any other business.

It was announced at the Tory conference.
The context was Brexit for (fusty) Little Englanders.
Apparently they are going to jail estate agents too - so not all bad.

Not sure what relevance this has to "Brexit". If any at all.

Which country would that be - there are 3 legal systems in the UK.

Does that include Sharia Law? :D

    On an ongoing basis?
You must work for an advanced bank because RBS/NatWest doesn't do that.

Perhaps they're concerned that a customer could run up an overdraft and then get deported?

Move your politics elsewhere please. Has nothing to do with budgeting and bank accounts.

    From December 2014

    Advice to banks:
    https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/386215/Guidance_on_current_accounts_provisions_-_banks_and_building_societies_v_1.1.pdf

The Home Office has provided details of individuals who are known to be unlawfully present in the UK and who are disqualified from opening a current account to CIFAS. Banks and building societies should check details of those who have applied for new current accounts with CIFAS, which will enable them to confirm whether or not an individual is permitted to open a current account.

The subject matter is bank accounts.
I was asked to clarify the Brexit link - if you care to check...

redux has it right. Banks are required to screen applicants against a list of disqualified persons and refuse to open accounts for them.

If you find it objectionable that this happens then the proper time to object to it was several years ago when it was going through Parliament, well before 52% of us decided to drag the other 48% off a cliff.

I fully appreciate we need to do everything possible to combat fraud, money laundering, drug traders and terrorism.

I find it unbelievable though that it now appears to be ok to assume all non-Brits are first and foremost potential criminals and need to be subjected to special checks. May I remind you some of the key criminals who brought the UK to the edge of bankruptcy were UK nationals (and they weren't even put into jail). The guys who mowed down Lee Rikby and who committed the 7/7 atrocities were British citizens. Jihadi John was a Brit. The guys found guilty of supporting international drugs trade on a grand scale worked for the erstwhile british institution HSBC. And not to talk of British mand Phillip Green, who robbed tens of thousands or pensioners and is a free man. Except for border checks, I find it disgusting that non-british born are being singled out for checks that british-born don't have to undergo.

How is checking yo see if someone has the right to be in the UK treating them like criminals? , it's no different to any UK citizen going through an id check, whether that's electronic or by providing documents etc
