Electrical work at £1386...

Options
Hey guys,

I'm in the process of buying a property in South London with my wife and we've had a quote which has outlined a bunch of work that needs to be carried out on the flat we're buying. Here is what we've got to bring it in line with modern building standards.

There's a bunch of small jobs and they've quoted £1386 for the below. Is this reasonable for an electricians time and materials etc? Or should we be looking elsewhere.

Thank you so much guys

Jake

1. Upgrade main gas and water bonding (from 6mm to 10mm)
2. Re-fix 2 x sockets to the wall in the lounge
3. Install trunking over exposed single insulated cables in kitchen
4. Replace 3cracked socket in bedroom
5. Replace bathroom pendant light fitting in the bathroom with bathroom rated fitting
6. Install trunking over exposed single insulated cables in the bedroom cupboard
7. Replace existing consumer unit with Dual RCD Amendment 3 board
8. Install trunking over exposed single insulated cables in bedroom
9. Install mechanical protection over single insulated cables in consumer unit cupboard

None of us have seen the job.
  • Appreciated, I'm looking to see if it is complete nonsense or not.
If you have any specific questions which would be helpful feel free to ask...

OK. For one you mention "single insulated cables" presumably meaning non-sheathed cables. Are these singles cables, or are they insulated and sheathed multicore cables where the sheath has been removed outside of enclosures?

    I don't have a clue what 1,7, & 9 are (I'm not an electrician).

However, these are easily done by yourself, easily in 2-3 hours with time to spare for less than £100. Not sure how much the light fitting would be though.

Our local electrician who we've hired for trickier things charges £175+VAT+Materials for 1/2 a day, and £275+VAT+Materials for a full day. The above would fall under 1/2 a day for him.

This is incredibly useful! Thank you so much. Looks like this is something we could potentially rope in a savvy friend to help fix and then only lean on an electrician for the more complex items :)

I wouldn't jump the gun. This poster already told you that they are not an Electrician, and therefore may not be giving good advice.

I asked questions about the installation to which I await an answer. The answers may have a big impact on the cost of rectifying this, and someone not qualified or competent to give advice doing so anyway is not going to be of help to you.

Risteard, you talk like a complete novice should understand what you're talking about.

OP, from an aesthetic point of view and for the work in what won't be a cheap property in South London, I wouldn't want trunking at all. I'd expect it channelled into the wall. Your choice though!

There's not much I can do about that as I haven't been to the property, nor have I seen any pictures. So if unable to understand my questions then that would certainly be indicative of someone not in a position to take the work on themselves!

Have to agree with that. I've seen trunking in a "rewired" flat - it looks awful.
But I've got wiring that has been badly channelled into the wall - it annoys me whenever I look at it, but I've got used to seeing it. Didn't use that company again!

I didn't say they were. Maybe you can tell them what to look for?
