Removing Artex

A cheap way to remove artex is the following: Score the artex with either a sharp knife or a screwdriver. Get a bucket of soapy water (cold water and cheap washing up liquid work) Soak the wall with the water and wait about 15-20 minutes. Scrape off with a wallpaper scraper. Works a treat!

I think you've been really blessed there! It is one thing getting it off, it is quite another what you find underneath. In my experience, in older properties, you have to assume that artex/woodchip/anaglypta is covering a multitude of problems! Unless you've got the money in the kitty for replastering, it is a big gamble!
