BT Internet calling - there is a problem with your broadband

New version of the "Windows Technical Support, there is a fault with your computer".

Caller (Indian accent) claims they are from BT Internet Openreach and they will have to disconnect your broadband or your computer has downloaded some malicious files or there is something wrong with your broadband speed.

They also say that as all broadband suppliers use BT's cabling, your broadband is affected no matter who your supplier is

String the along and then tell them you're with Virgin cable.:D

This does not work, because as I said in the OP, they say all broadband goes via BT cable. This is what they said when I told them I was with another supplier.

I've now had about 4/5 calls from them and my responses range from "Thank you, goodbye" to those of a less polite variety, dependant upon my mood and whether I have time to string them along.

The Windows Technical Support calls are usually every 6 weeks and get similar response. And before someone suggests Truecall I do not want one.

In that case don't answer, leave an answer machine on and listen to see who is calling, is it is scammers they will usually ring off as soon as the answer machine cuts in.

Not practical, have genuine callers who won't leave message, so would miss those calls.

The point of my post is just to inform there is a variation on the Windows Technical Support scam doing the rounds.

  • Already had a few of these ourselves. Bearable for me but my OH really takes it out on them if they are female callers - they get the full "What colour is your underwear routine". Boys eh?

MIL had one of these the other day, she said sorry I don't have a computer. they replied but you have a tablet or mobile phone don't you. No she says, don't need them. Cue rude language(I think) so she put the phone down.

ps she was actually telling them the truth.

These type of calls really irritate me, my solution was BT caller display, any calls indicating number unavailable or suspect numbers go unanswered .

This combined with the answer machine works for me.

They can say what the hell they like but they are wrong, Virgin operate their own fibre optic network separate from BT.

I know, because I'm on Virgin myself. I was just warning MSErs these people just lie if you try to counter their script. To the unwary, they can seem very authoritative and also persuasive.
