TV Chanels taking 6 seconds to register ?

We have had our free sat box a few years and have had no problems. The TVs is Panasonic and that too has been problem free. Just lately though, when we change channels, the bar showing the next channel comes up, show the number of the channel and which one it is, i.e. 102 BBC 2 and the name of the program currently being shown.

The issue is that for about 6 seconds, the screen is black and we sit and wait before it registers. What could be wrong?

Just intendedtrying, but we are currently recording two different chanels, so there would be a conflict, as soon as possible during evening, I will endeavour to see if we can take this a stage further, so please come back.

What age is your Panasonic? I have a 10 year old 32" Freeview model which I am about to replace with something in newer technology, then use in another part of the house. You are right about Panasonic though, the old model still works fine, as does the paired Hdd/DVD recorder.

Can you download the latest firmware and channel listings (EPG) direct to the TV? Mine still does that through the aerial, even now.
I think this job really needs
    a much bigger hammer.

Is the hdd on the freesat nearly full, or it could be on it's way out. when you change channels it will write to the disk for the purpose of live pausing .... just an idea

Ok, before I answer the two comments, we have just started at 101 and worked our way through. We pressed for the next Chanel and started counting to see how long it took before the chosen Chanel came into view. Without question, anything involving any of the BBC chanels kept us waiting and we reached 107/8. Plus ITV3. All the others seemed to be ok.

We intend doing this exercise again tomorrow.

It is also worth noting we record all our programs as routine. The reason is apart from being sad old gits is that we tend to get a lot of evening calls and we can easily put any program on hold. Also, we mostly watch BBC 1 ITV CHANNEL 4 CHANNEL 5. BUT, because we started having issues, now record the HD version of a CHANNEL. An added thing of note, my wife has a lot of unwatched films.

Finally, we live in Weymouth, and the local news is South-East, so when we re-tune, I always type in a postcode for somewhere like Torquay, that way we get South-West news, our preferred area for news coverage.

My Panasonic tv has to be about 10 yrs old, and the recorder is a Humax and is about 8yrs but we have a new dish, 6 months as we moved house. What do you mean by firmware ?.
My wife thinks we should do a rescan after deleting programs, but I would prefer to do things in stages to try and identify and eliminate theories.

PS, it occurred to me that if half the hard drive is taken up with films that have yet to be watched, the other half is in constant use, and if much of that is by programmes with commercial breaks, we tend to zoom fast forward constantly. So would we in effect be causing wear to the drive.

    PPS
I have now removed a considerable amount of recorded material, it made no difference. I then retuned, this too has made no difference, so will now wait and see if this means anything to you. We will be out till mid afternoon.

Tried disconnecting the recorder from the mains for a while? This often speeds up my TVs recorder.

No we haven't, but we will and leave it for five mins, then get back to you.

Have you changed the V-FORMAT setting? What screen resolution do you have the Humax set to?

Press the V-FORMAT button while watching a programme. The current resolution will be displayed.
Each time you press the V-FORMAT button, the resolution changes in the following sequence: 576i576p720p1080iOriginal.
