I have a HP officejet 5740 and it takes HP 62 ink. I do a lot of printing and was wondering if anyone had tried non HP ink and did they work?

Recent news stories suggest that HP (amongst others) have updated their firmware which has resulted in non-HP cartridges being reported as faulty or non compatible and printing stops. Other more recent news stories have suggested that HP have been found out and are going to revert the firmware to original - we have to wait and see!0

I've never bought branded ink cartridges, and never had any problems with them.
If the HP printer doesn't print with compatibles, I'd be tempted to return it to the shop who sold it claiming that it is no longer fit for purpose as it doesn't function as a printer.
I doubt you'd get very far, but if EVERYONE did this, and insisted that retailers and manufacturers be held responsible for damaging people's property with corrupt firmware updates... I like to think that common sense would reign for once.0 -
I *ONLY* use compatible cartridges - the ink in 'proper' ones is more expensive than unicorn tears, blood plasma, the finest whiskies, etc.
The manufacturers sell the printers at or below cost in order to sell the inks, so if you get two sets of compatibles through before one kills a printer you're still quids-in.0 -
HP are reacting to the backlash for customers by reversing the firmware mistake with another optional firmware update in the next couple of weeks.Recent news stories suggest that HP (amongst others) have updated their firmware which has resulted in non-HP cartridges being reported as faulty or non compatible and printing stops. See HERE.
To answer the OP.....I've never had any trouble with compatible cartridges. I think my HP printer is too old to be affected by the latest shenanigans....So, apart from that hiccup, give them a try.Drinking Rum before 10am makes you

I have read that HP have now agreed to send new software to enable the printers to work again.
Epson tried this some years ago but compatible inks now work well for me.
The one thing I would do is block any software ''upgrades'' in your printer files.0 -
Like esuhl I've :
- never bought branded
- never had a problem in 35 years
- never been drunk enough to buy anything but Epson @ any priceDisclaimer : Everything I write on this forum is my opinion. You could go for ink tanks instead. But really, you're best going with refillables. It will save you a packet.
If you do a lot of HQ printing then leasing a business printer could work out better for you,0 -
I bought an HP printer because it was ex display at ASDA and dirt cheap, i was looking to get some spare carts just in case and found them on offer at Argos.
Discounted and they had a buy 2 for the price of one? or get the 2nd half price? I forget the actual deal but i bought 2 genuine ones for less than the price of ebay compatibles.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -

Th OPs machine wasn't one that was affected, it was the more expensive models taking individual ink tanks that were and that's because the update detected and cancelled non HP chips, in the case of the OPs cartridges, No62, they refill very successfully (if done properly) they use the original chip and will show empty but you can cancel that error so you won't be nagged that the cartridge/s is/are every time you print.I hate football and do wish people wouldn't keep talking about it like it's the most important thing in the world0 -
I have a fairly new Brother printer. I'm planning to use branded cartridges until the printer warranty runs out, then move over to compatibles.
I've used compatibles before, on an Epson printer and had no problems.0
