Even when it all drops into place it's a very stressful day - up there alongside death and divorce.

And when you move in next week don't forget your utilities.

  • Welcome to Britain!

This all might have worked out in one of the more efficient countries - Germany/Scandinavian ones...but here...one learns to build in an "other b&gger mucking up" allowance mentally speaking after some years of living here in respect of everything darn it (I can say that - because I am British...ie English:rotfl:).

Yep....agreed....it was asking for trouble to try and Exchange and Complete on same day. Ditto asking for trouble to go for Completion on a Friday.

I agree with G_M that your solicitor isn't the "other b&gger that's at fault" in this case.

Things like this do happen, and when it goes wrong it can be very stressful.
Obviously someone is at fault for paying into the wrong account.
You need to speak to your solicitors on Monday to first of all ensure exchange happens (most important) but then enquire more how this happened, who is at fault and what is the person responsible for this prepared to do.
because exchange does regularly not happen on days it's supposed to, I don't think you will get very far. As said above this is one of the risks of exchanging and completing on same day.

Frankly, that's not the OP's problem.

Assuming the incorrect bank details were indeed the solicitor's problem, then the mis-transfer is the solicitor's problem, along with any reasonable costs directly arising from it. So, yes, the hotel bill would be covered.

If they don't I should think they'll be liable for repaying it? If it's gone to a different solicitor though one would hope they'll pay it back.

A little bit of sympathy for the OP perhaps - the largest transaction of their life so far and all the money has been sent to an unknown third party. I'm not surprised they're worried even without considering the practical problems with the move not happening today. Exchange and completion on the same day doesn't seem to be the problem here, this could've happened even if they'd exchanged weeks ago.

Exchange and completion on the same day doesn't seem to be the problem here, this could've happened even if they'd exchanged weeks ago.

Less likely though, because if they are using the same bank account details for both transactions, then a mistake at exchange gets picked up and once fixed they copy the details for completion so a mistake is less likely.

It's like me paying you a tenner by direct transfer prior to paying you ten thousand pounds, first time ensure the details are right and I reuse them for the second time..

But even if that's not a factor, that's where the second issue, completing on a Friday, comes into play, no time to recover from a mistake and the weekend to stew on it.

1.) My Lender is Nationwide and they sent the money to the Solicitor a while ago. The solicitors have put the wrong details in for the transfer of money and sent it to another Solicitor.... they used NatWest for the transfer.

Then the fault lies with your solicitor - you should expect him to foot the bill for any expenses arising from his error.

Yes, as other posters have said, it is not a good idea to exchange/complete on a Friday but this does not detract from the fact that your solicitor did make a serious mistake and has caused you anxiety and inconvenience.

Becoming a house owner for the first time can induce feelings of "what have I got myself into" - I remember my despair when many years ago on my first night in my newly purchased flat, I heard a horrible noise and then found that the central heating/hot water had failed.

I called a totally inept plumber ( my despair deepened) - the people next door came to my rescue, put me in touch with the company they used and all was well.

The pump had gone because the executor of the estate of the owner of the flat had turned off the water supply to the system....

To be fair, when I complained, she did compensate me for half of the cost....
