The wood comes from indigenous oak forests in China and it should be banned, it's as bad as buying mahogany or ebony wood from rain forests.

Not sure I agree totally with that because we buy in Sapele hardwood which is a member of the Mahogany family but from sustainable sources.

Felling Oaks is not a problem as long as they are replenishing stocks with new saplings in the same way we do with the pine forests in Scotland and Wales.

That along with the scale of felling is the issue and when we went to Borneo and flew over Sabah you can see areas where felling of their rainforest has taken place to plant palm trees for oil but the Malaysian Govt have restricted the palm oil plantations because they understand the importance of the ecology and see the bigger picture . They have gone into eco tourism in a big way but if you fly South over Kilimantan (Indonesian Borneo) they have devestated the rainforests and planted huge palm oil farms so you find next to no wildlife left . Very few Orangutans are left in these areas whereas in Sabah they are being protected far better as are the rainforests.

My rather long winded point is ,not all felling in the rainforests is wrong as long as its managed properly.

Close shave, it could be the best £175 you ever spent.

See other threads about the poor quality furniture they produce and their reluctance to do anything about it when their furniture arrives damaged or falls apart under nothing more than gravity.

Find a decent UK manufacturer, plenty out there.

We chose OFL last year for our lounge and have been really pleased with the quality to be honest. I've heard plenty of bad stories about customer service though, so from my experience I would say good quality products but cross your fingers that you don't run into any issue!

We have number of items from them, and we are very happy with the quality.
However we also had problem with the wardrobe going upstairs.
I put it down to our fault, as I did not measure it and we have tiny stairs space.
In the end I matched the wardrobe to the rest of furniture from M&S.. You wouldn't know looking at it it is different supplier, but it came in 2 pieces so we could get it upstairs!!
However it was a lot more expensive wardrobe... £400 more then OFL.

Interesting... We still need to get furniture and self-assembly seems the way forward. Will check it out!

The newspaper managed to get it down to £100 with haggling and solicitors involved:-

Ok I feel like I did quite well then! Keeping the equilibrium between money, effort and stress

there are a few "Oak Furniture Clearance" stores dotted around we go to the one in Kidderminster.

Not sure exactly where their stuff comes from but the kind of faults and the amount of stock they have does mean there is a lot of faulty gear out there.

I was told by one of their sales rep that the oak wood comes from China.

I was thinking more of which Oak Furniture ***** the clearance stuff comes from.

it might be Land or could be one of the many others.

They do have some very cheap stuff if you are a handy as some of the damage is easy repair.
Some of the really broken stuff is cheap wood for projects.

If you look around the places that do this stuff a lot looks like it comes from the same factories.

Looking at M&S, the Dawson self-assembly furniture looks nice but is really expensive! More so than OFL! £358 for 2x bedside tables? Wow. Are there any other companies anyone can recommend?

Must be self-assembly and we don't like Ikea's range.

Need double wardrobe, chest of drawers and bedside tables. A dressing table is a bonus. Thanks!

I hope you're right and im wrong. Oak trees take a long time to mature in comparison to pines and the sudden intake of oak makes me question where it is sourced: indigenous natural habitats or replenished and managed stocks.

Why not support locally grown pine? Devonshire Pine is a good company from which I bought good quality pine furniture on two occations.

We bought a dining table from OFL and it is gorgeous.

Shame about the wardrobe issue :(

We have one too in the Rustic finish. The only thing I dislike about it is the crumbs which collect in the grooves! Having a toddler means it gets messy quite quickly but a sharp exhale of breath normally fixes it!
