Could you look into freezing some sperm so that if heavens forbid someone does change their mind the option isn't completely gone?

Another one who believes if the lady is sure she never wants children, she should ensure it cannot happen for herself.
Sterilised at age 28, on the NHS. I had two children then aged 4 and 3, and had miscarried 2 years previously. Couldn't take the pill (blood clot in the lung caused by it when I was 18). Diaphragm was hit and miss. Coil led to horrific periods.
!!!!less now ex-husband wouldn't use condoms - or have a vasectomy until the cricket or football season was over, so that was never going to happen then.
Operation was done in under 20 mins from being in the anaesthetic room to the recovery room, and was a laparoscopy (sp?). Out the same day, laughed sounding like Beavis and Butthead as had two stitches. Never looked back.LBM July 2006. Debt free 01 Sept 12 .. :T

Female sterilisation is available on the NHS and is not a major procedure
It is done by keyhole surgery and normally a day case in hospital.

There's also Essure. This procedure involves plugging the fallopian tubes from within so no surgical incisions needed. Obviously much less invasive and little recovery time needed. I'm not certain if all areas offer this yet but it is becoming popular.0 -
Why should a healthy young woman not get sterilsed but a healthy, younger man ( she is 36 , he is 32) can.
No idea, ask the NHS, all I'm saying is that it's very difficult for women to get, not that it should be something the man should have rather than the woman.
As someone who knows she doesn't want children I've lost count of the number of times I've been told I'll change my mind when I get older (or worse, meet the 'right man' - met him, still don't want to have a child), it seems there's a belief that at some point for women an urge to have a baby will kick in and override anything and everything else.0 -
That's quite young then. Have you both have counselling? You certainly should be having it as part of the treatment before the procedure.
I personally would say that you are both too young to make such a decision when there are safe methods to avoid pregnancy but then again, if you are both absolutely convinced that you would never want children no matter what happened in your life, then you might as well take the stress away from the worry of a pregnancy.
I don't think 36 and 32 are too young to make a decision not to have children.
I was late 20's when OH had his vasectomy and he was a couple of years younger than me. He had to go private because of our ages and the fact we didn't have any children.

Surely you should ask the medical profession this question? I have a friend who was adamant she did not want any more than the 2 children she had. She finally got the operation this year but was fuming that she had to wait so long because some well meaning doctor thought she didn't know her own mind. Why should a healthy young woman not get sterilsed but a healthy, younger man ( she is 36 , he is 32) can.
I would like to be sterilised but a vasectomy for DH is the easier option. It is a day procedure and he could be back at work the next day. Sterilisation for a woman could mean they are unable to lift anything or drive for a week. Keyhole surgery looks great but it is still major, invasive surgery.0 -

I agree that some people are capable of sticking to their decision, but there must be thousands more that change their minds. I think it's sensible for doctors to take this into account, especially if as in the OPs case it's mostly the partner that is adamantly against having children.0 -

It's because people change their minds that doctors are so reluctant to agree to an op especially if someone is youngish and doesn't have children. It's a shame more people don't think things through, make a decision and stick to itThe world is over 4 billion years old and yet you somehow managed to exist at the same time as David Bowie0 -
Devils Advocate:
You split up post vasectomy but before the wedding.
You meet someone you cant live without
She desperately wants kids and now you do to...
You stay and get married
She changes her mind on kids (this does happen)
You change your mind on kids
What is the purpose of making a firm and final decision now? Is it for medical reasons or for enjoyment of sex? I dont want any of these other scenarios to happen to you but there are many different outcomes here and unless you really hate kids and the thought of having them you may live to regret a decision you didnt have to make at the time.MFW - <£90kAll other debts cleared thanks to the knowledge gained from this wonderful website and its users!0
