Ooh now youv'e lost me, what are master or slave cylinders? Sounds a bit like dominatrix to me
Basically, its the components between the clutch pedal and the actual clutch on the end of the engine which are used to slip the clutch gently together from standstill when you accelerate. Let use know exactly what parts were replaced.0 -
Heres a tip if this ever happens to people.
I took my car in for a new exhaust. The exhaust was blowing and some bits were quite loose and in danger of falling off. I was away from home and hence had to use a garage I had no experience of.
Anyway, when they were fitting the exhaust, they started to make comments about the two front tyres, saying they were bald. I took a look and they seemed fine to me. Wearing down certainly, but no were near needing to be replaced.
So I am waiting for my new exhaust and suddenly I see a mechanic wheeling my tyre to me (he had taken it off!) trying to say its illegal and he cant let me drive it away with that tyre as it was. He was trying to sell me a premuim tyre.
Now I aint a qualified mechanic, but that tyre was fine (it passed a MOT 3 months and 5000 miles later!).
So what did I do? What could I do? I can't drive away, my car has no front tyres.
I get on the phone. Trading Standards? A dog with no teeth! My big brothers? To far away!
No, I ring the RAC. Speaking loudly into the phone so everyone can hear I explain that I have a problem with my front tyres and the car is un-driveable. I explain that I don't have enough money on me to pay for new tyres and I need recovering.
I don't know if was the thought of arguing the point with the RAC man, but the garage soon whipped the tyres back on, explaining they wernt so bad after all!
Just a handy tip. Even with your car in bits inside a dodgey garage, if you have breakdown cover, call them in. The likes of RAC/AA want to get you going (they don't want to recover unless they have to) and dodgey garage people don't (and probably can't) aruge with a pro.
Cheers

It may be just a bad description of the fault, but usually when people say it 'won't go into gear', they mean the gearstick won't go to the 'gear selected' position...
If the clutch was 'worn out' then it would go into gear easily, but you wouldn't get any drive i.e. you let the clutch out and it wouldn't go anywhere.
'won't go into gear' suggests failed hydraulics (master cyl/slave cyl/pipework) or (less likely) sudden failure of the clutch, or release mechanism. If the latter, it will be obvious, the parts will be physically broken, not worn out.
Check with your son *exactly* what was the fault demonstrated.
Cheers
My son who is back at uni told me that the mechanic showed him that it would not go into gear therefor the clutch needed replacing!
The ammount of money that Uni is costing I think it may have been better spent on mechanics!
I am also thinking that the garage will not have the old one now and even if they did, how would we know if it is the same one?I USED TO BE INDECISIVE BUT NOW I'M NOT SO SURE!
