Is he being ripped off, advice please

Firstly my son took his fiesta for a service at a local garage. They advised a change of cam belt when it reached 100,000 miles. It was nearly at this.
He took it to have this done and when he went to collect it he was told the clutch had gone and needed replacing. My son (who is not the wisest when it come to cars etc) said it was driving ok when he took it in. The mechanic showed him his car and it would not go into gear at this point. My son felt he had no alternative other than to have the cluch replaced costing a further £200 plus.
Now, I find this rather strange as I had driven the car the previous day and did not notice anything with the clutch. It was not slipping and seemed perfectly ok to me.
My son is a genuine lad and a student who can least afford this. He has not paid the bill yet as it will arrive in the post.
Do you think he was conned? and is he within his rights to do anything about this?
Comments and advice would be appreciated

Ask for the old parts before you pay the bill and get someone in the know to have a look at them and take it from there.
  • Thanks for that

Difficult to say whether it needed doing immediately, but if it was the original clutch, it must be pretty worn at 100k, particularly on a Fiesta which are generally used as town cars.

I did 135000 miles in my last car when i sold it, still on its original clutch. If its not slipping one day, it is not going to slip must the next.

    Thanks for the reply robyne

His brother is going to go in with him as it was him who said it sounds real dodgy to him. He thinks they saw him coming. He said the same as you that he had never heard of a clutch going when a cam belt was being changed. It really peeves me when innocent people are being taken advantage of, not just my son but anyone. There are some unscrupulous people about.

Don't think he did note the milage to be honest. Knowing him he wouldn't, he would not think of it. To trusting too
