Giffgaff 4G "speed" con.

  • I have always found giffgaff 4G to be slow and certainly slower than when I was with o2 directly as a PAYM customer.

In central London on giffgaff I get:
    Ping: 41ms
    Download: 2.83 Mbps
    Upload: 2.41 Mbps

But I'm still sticking with giffgaff because I tend to use wifi more often than not when I'm at home or work and their sim only pricing is pretty good overall.
  • I'm on Three and when I do a speedtest, 3G is faster than 4G.

    Both equally awesome on giffgaff...*

*Note, at same time in my office I have colleagues on O2, Tesco (same O2 network) and Vodaphone getting 30-40mbps download speed.

I do love how the ads even mock me about my speed... :D

I've been on giffgaff for three days and used 500meg of my "unlimited" (6gb) allowance so no official throttling of my line here.
  • Ooh, I didn't realise Giffgaff did that to mobile internet too.
Some years ago now we (the whole family near enough) moved to Giffgaff.
All was fine (ish) until summer high season and the arrival of holidaymakers - then texts would be delayed (often for many hours) and calls were often just not possible.
From autumn onwards all would be okay (ish) again.
We stayed only until the 2nd summer and vowed that we would not return to an O2 MVNO again.

Friends on Tesco found they had problems too BUT much less frequently - we assume depending upon how busy the network was with other users.
Even now they sometimes cannot use data services.

That was me that said that
No its not Nonsense Gifgaff get a third class service you may get fall bars on your phone BUT it doesn't mean you will be able to use your data all i got was unable to connect to service O2 and Tesco get a far better service.

The thing that i cannot work out with GG is that O2 own it out right and yet they give it a really poor third class service they also own half of Tesco mobile and they get a lot better service just don't make sense to me.
Someone should open a vote to see how many people get good service and how many people get bad service from Giffgaff i don't know how to do the vote thing or i would have opened one it would be nice to just see how bad GG really are.

O2 tend to have capacity problems, particularly where they haven't upgraded their network as part of their network sharing arrangement with Vodafone.

Much of their 2G/3G is 900 MHz and 4G is 800 Mhz which are good for coverage but not capacity/data speed.
