Tesco e-statements

Hi
I just wanted to post a thread to encourage people to set up a direct debit to their credit cards (which I know clever people will have done!)

For the first time ever I missed a minimum payment on my tesco card - why, because they went paperless! I did not twig the statement had not arrived (my cue to pay it off in full) and merrily enjoyed August.

Yesterday a paper statement came and I had been charged a £12 late payment fee. I rang them up, as I did not know why and was told that they had emailed me to let me know they were doing e-statements.

Yes, I admit, they had done, weeks before, but I promptly forgot.

I asked for a refund of the fee as I had never done it before - no go. I then asked why I had received a paper statement this month as they had stopped them and she explained they felt I might like them restarted.

My logic tells me Tesco must have had 100's of peopple forget and hence hundreds of £12's

I have online banking and e-statements for other cards - those cards email me to let me know they have uploaded a statement ready for me - tesco don't appear to do this automatically, I had to log in and choose it as an option - mmmmm, the cynic in me tells me they want you not to pay on time.

have learned - have set up direct debit, have closed this card and voted with my feet

Tesco - every little helps (them!)

Ah, feel better now.

  • They let you know they were doing e-statements by email, you forgot and then got a charge? Why are Tesco at fault here?

No, I am not saying tesco are at fault, they DID email me 3 wks before they changed. I am curious as to why there is not an email notification to let you know it is there.

  • An email to let you know you have an email?

    Maybe I'm not following correctly!

No, sorry, maybe not as lucid as I could be - an email to let me know my monthly statement is available online and then I would go to site to pay. I asked and they dont just email the statement to you, you have to log on to get it and pay it, what with a hectic life (and a terrible memory) I would never remember to log on each month.... then again maybe I misunderstood.

Hope this makes sense, might go and lie in a darkened room :rotfl:

No doubt a £12.00 charge will improve the memory.
  • Sorry but I don't really see what more Tesco could have done for you? Any internet banking I have set up always send an email telling me my statement is ready to view and then I need to log in and view it, I've always presumed this was for security reasons.

At work what I've started to do is make different folders in my email to move emails I get into these folders. So you could for example put your important bank ones etc in a folder 'Bank' or 'To Action'. Or set a reminder on your computer calendar.

That's worrying, has everybody had an email. If I get charged, that will be the last penny they get from me.

I think the the OP's point is that Tesco's don't automatically send you an email like your other accounts do. It seems that in Tesco's case it is an option that you have to tick.
  • I received the same email as all the other Tescos customers, however, I've just checked on line and my statement has been produced - how long do we have to wait for the email telling us its available on line?
  • That seems to be the point - Tesco do not seem to send out this email automatically, you need to tick an option on their website. I'm sure that several people will say 'it's your responsibility to check online' but even so, it is very sharp practice and will only serve to alienate and lose customers.
