  • Just another thought, if you ever need to re-mortgage (a fixed rate ending for example) you would probable need a large income to be able for a lender to loan you £190k +

This be true. Hadn't thought of that. I currently have one fixed rate until 2021 and one that just follows the BoE rate so not in any deal. Hoping that by 2021 rolls around, I will have made some overpayments, probably not significant ones, but some at least.

  • One of the reasons Im overpaying (well trying to!) is that in years to come I wont need some mega salary for my mortgage

Haha, we are on the same page. Mainly why I read your diary as well.

You're all right about the benefits being stopped at any time. It just grates when I hardly see my kids and there are other options.

I'm sorry to sound harsh, but that's the reality of life. Before the introduction of tax credits how do you think people managed?

Hey you're doing much better than me, I've still got £227,000 to go :rotfl:

You're not being harsh at all. And I don't know how people coped before tax credits, I guess similar to the way I'm coping now, by working?

I have worked since I was 18, since I was 22 with this employer, and I understand that it is the reality of life. Obviously I do, as otherwise I would have taken the "easy" way out and not bought a house at 21 and shot a kid out at 18. :)

I was just looking at the options of not working quite so much when my children are small. I wasn't thinking about quitting altogether.

  • Well, your children are only young once. If they need you there, it's best to be there for them. Attitudes towards women who look after their children instead of putting them in childcare can be so negative (usually from other women!), but bringing up children and running a house is also a job.

I agree, your children are only young once. I would be tempted too.

Honestly I don't think women can win, whatever the choice. But at the end of the day the only people you are trying to impress are your kids - tosh to what other pple think
The opposite of what you know...is also true
