Well bad news all round for you, I'm afarid
(1) if your fix is ending today, then unless you apply for another Eon tariff today, you will go onto Eons expensive variable rate tariff.
(2) If you are in debt to the sum of £340, then you''ll need to settle that debt if you wish to switch supplier. But you could still transfer tariff staying within Eon.
But if you don't settle the debt, then Eon may impose PPMs on you to get the money out of you. Still at least it won't cost you any more than the expensive variable rate tariff you are heading towards. (save for the debt repayment part)
Don't forget, a debt is not a debt until 28 days after it has been formally demanded. (i.e. billed)
Normally you don't get a bill if you pay monthly by DD; you get statements and the DD will be adjusted if necessary.
(3) So if you are paying monthly by DD and you haven't actually been hit with a demand yet, at least if you stay with Eon, they will simply adjust your monthly DD accordingly. (typically allowing you to repay the accrued debit over a similar period it accrued over). However, if you switch supplier, Eon will hit you with a bill which they will expect to be paid in full.
(4) if you were so inaccurate in your anticipated annual consumption you entered when you entered into the contract with Eon that you are now £340 in debit, then the Eon tariff may not have been the best option for you in the first place.
Ensure you update your CEC account with more accurate consumption data.0 -

Hello rabialiones.
Some excellent information from footyguy. Thanks footyguy.
There are certainly cases where we might object to a switch away because debt is involved. It depends on the individual circumstances. Particularly things like how long the account has been in debt and if any payment arrangements have failed.
Usually, we object where the debit is over £200 and has been outstanding for more than 28 days. Also where we've sent a formal request for payment more than 28 days ago (this doesn't include a first reminder). As I say, individual circumstances also have an impact on the decision. For instance, if we've done something wrong and this has contributed towards you not paying. If we do object, we'll write to let you know.
Payment in full will sort this straightaway but I appreciate this might not be possible. If you do need to go on to another of our tariffs whilst this is sorted, all the ones on our website have no exit fees so you can switch supplier without being charged at any time. There are also no charges for switching from one E.ON tariff to another.
As it stands, we'll include the outstanding debt on your existing payment arrangement and spread this up to the annual review. Talk to us if this is still difficult to manage. We'll look to see if it's possible to spread it over a longer period.
Hope this helps point you in the right direction rabialiones.

please advise:-
I understood that if you switch suppliers then you can keep the same tariff up to 20 days after, in which time the new supplier should have took over.
please correct me if I am wrong in thinking this
so hopefully, if I switch today and pay of the remainder of balance in next few days, I should be ok
in my eon account my current tariff is still showing as September 2015 collective switch
the tariffs which they have recommended to me have no exit fees, but I am not really sure which they will put me on
the amount owing is due to fact that I supplied them with a meter reading, previous readings were estimates and dd was just continuing to be paid, I have never been in any debt with them , nor ever had any requests for payments and not paid
my dd has gone up from £73 to £129Nice to save.0 -
will eon rep please reply asap , as I am running out of time and panicking
my bp is going up up up , just like my energy consumption and billsNice to save.0 -

It's the Price Protection window rabialiones. This kicks in when fixed term contracts near the end. It's open 49 calendar days before the tariff end date until 20 working days after. During this time and provided we're told, we'll make sure you're protected against any price changes that aren't in your favour whilst a change of supplier goes through. Switches usually take about two and half weeks. Exit fees also don't apply whilst this window is open.
The difficulty here could be when your chosen supplier applies for the account. This usually happens quite early on and, if the balance is still there, it's likely we'll object to you switching. Hopefully you'll be okay but thought I ought to just flag this up.
I suspect we've increased the monthly payments to include the outstanding balance.

that's fine thanks, I will pay current balance owed over next couple of days minus dd which is due on 7th October, so hopefully I should be ok
I definitely need to change as comparison shows if I go on collective I will save around £400 annuallyNice to save.0 -

Totally understand rabialiones. From what you say, I think you'll be okay to switch.
I've also added you to the list of customers unhappy with our tariffs that I've been sending to management.
Sorry to lose you.

Could someone, directly affected by EON's decision to disadvantage existing customers, attempt to get 'Watchdog' or similar to feature it in their programme?
I suspect Eon will make a calculated business decision by estimating how much revenue they will raise from those unaware of the cheaper tariff, against the numbers switching to a new supplier and loss of goodwill/reputation.
My concern is that other companies might follow Eon unless the matter is given adverse publicity.
Also added this post to my feedback Cardew. I'll be signing off for a couple of weeks shortly but Helena will be here if you or others need any updates or further information.
