bbc iplayer radio abroad

Is there a simple way for me to download a daily bbc iplayer radio podcast when I am in spain.
I understand for tv you need a vpn is it the same for radio? I would like to download it onto my Samsung s5 mobile over wifi.
Does anyone know of a (preferably free) way of doing this please?
Many thanks.

f you download the app from the UK and go on holiday abroad, the app will work outside the UK.

I have the app downloaded and although I believe that items already recorded / downloaded in the UK will play abroad on the app, I'm asking how to download a bbc podcast whilst I am abroad. I have access to wifi.

Really? Because I'm sure I tried this before in spain and it would not allow me access. I will look into this. Thanks.

edit: you can use the iplayer radio app abroad to listen to podcasts etc downloaded in the uk but you cannot download from the app whilst abroad.

Radio programmes off the schedule can be listened to, but can't be downloaded abroad. Podcasts on the other hand can be freely downloaded abroad using either BBC Radio iPlayer app (but podcasts are hard to locate, being bottom of the searched list), or via a podcast app or even via a free iTunes download.

You can also use an app such as Documents, use its browser to search for the podcast in Google then tap to download and play it back direct from the apps downloads folder.

I use TuneIn Radio app as mentioned above by poster Rhysadams

But I upgraded to the pro version. No adverts and record/schedule a recording of any station. I paid £3 awhile back but I see the price is now £7 but to me the reliable recording facility is worth it

    thanks for info.
i think my issue is the programme i like to download daily is not issued as a podcast. i will explore the vpn route i think. i have downloaded 2 apps from the google playstore, FlashVPN and SpeedVPN which are both free and will see if these work when i travel to spain next week.

The reason that some people report success abroad with Radio iPlayer could be they are using their roaming data for it, this automatically uses a UK VPN if the home mobile service is a UK one.
