2-leg connecting flight Rio->UK - eligible for compensation for ALL or only PART ?

Options
My son flew Rio to Madrid (with Iberia) then Madrid to London (with BA). Both legs were booked at the same time on one ticket via BA's website.

The Rio -> Madrid leg landed on time, but the Madrid -> London was delayed >4 hrs.

BA is telling us that we are only due compensation for the Madrid -> London leg (i.e. €250) but I am sure that I have read that so long as both flights were booked on the same ticket then it counts as a long-haul booking and should therefore be eligible for the greater amount of flight delay compensation (€600).

Googling around, there is not much, if any, info about this situation - where the 2nd part of the 2-leg flight was delayed.

Can anyone advise please?

Rightly or wrongly you can understand BA's viewpoint really..the claim is against the airline that delayed the passenger and is based on delay to final destination but from BAs view it was only at Madrid that your son became their passenger.
If you search for the EU261 forum on the BA board in Flyertalk you will find much discussion about whether this is right or wrong

there may also be reference on the BA thread on here (which is where this post should be)
  • Well, another point of view is that the ticket was booked all the way through from Rio to London via BA and both BA and Iberia are part of IAG... so it feels like BA are fobbing us off with a "thats not our fault, you need to contact Iberia".

this post on Flyertalk seems to agree with the approach BA are taking re compensation amount...up to you whether you want to take it to court to find a judge with a different viewpoint
