I've tried several times to install the above update, but it fails every time. I also downloaded the update manually and tried installing, but that failed too.
When the PC reboots to complete the update, it says, "Failure configuring updates", undoes the installation, and reboots again.
The Windows update history shows that the update fails with error 80004005.
I've searched the web, and glanced at C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log, but I can't make much sense of it.
Does anyone have any idea how to investigate or fix this problem?

leave it and come back to it at a later date, you may find it sorts itself out on it's own, you know, like when you get the random Configuring Updates etc. when you shut down, when you haven't just installed updates......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple0 -
Is this a dual boot machine with Linux ?
If so try removing the linux HDD and and just have the windows one in and perform the update then put the Linux one back in, I've been nailed by something like this a couple of time over the years regarding updates.Science isn't exact, it's only confidence within limits.0 -

Nah... I've been trying for a few days now. I just undoes the installation on reboot, then reboots again. Time consuming and tedious.Fightsback wrote: »Is this a dual boot machine with Linux ?

Eeek! I've got a stalker!Well remembered about the dual-boot situation, but the partitions for each OS are spread across multiple drives. The SSD has Windows "C:\" and Linux \ (root), \boot and \usr.
I haven't had any problems with the dual-boot before. (Actually, I'd been running a triple-boot system until I got rid of XP a year or so back).0 -
Don't know if it will help but have a read through this thread. It's a different update but same type scenario.

Well, what can I say, but, "You absolute legends!" :T
I came back to this issue today as a subsequent update also failed to install with the same error. I read through that thread and found that the issue was related to dual-boot systems, and the "boot" flag not being present on the Windows partition.
So, I booted into Linux, ran GParted, set the "boot" flag to the Windows partition, rebooted into Windows, and the updates install just fine!
I assumed the "boot" flag had to be on the boot partition (i.e. the one with the bootloader), but changing the flag had no effect to the booting process -- it still ran GRUB as before.
Strangely, I'm still getting error 80070005 when I run the Windows Update Troubleshooter (WindowsUpdateDiagnostic.diagcab), but... I think I'll quit while I'm ahead!
Thanks again! :beer:0
