I just thought I'd share this in case it turns out to be helpful to others ... maybe as a benchmark for what EE (my current provider) will offer.
I've been out of contract for a while, so I thought I'd try for an upgrade, with a new phone thrown in.
I called EE, O2, Tesco Mobile, Three and Virgin and checked the online price at GiffGaff, and I managed to get the following deal*, from EE (...after three calls and a fair bit of negotiation) which I thought was okay:
A new 32Gb iPhone 6s+ in Space Grey
1000 Mins talk time
Unlimited texts
3Gb of data
£38.49pm + £70 for the phone (an £80 payment - £10 which is going to be knocked off my bill).
* I'm slightly resigned to the fact that someone is probably going to tell me I could have got this cheaper somewhere else, but ho hum. I did see it very slightly cheaper elsewhere, but the rub was that it was only available in Rose Gold colour (urg!) and because it was via a wholesaler the guarantee would be shorter.

First and foremost there's nothing wrong with the Rose Gold colour-that's the colour of my iPhone and iPad haha.
Mind the upgrade offer EE have given you is 'better value' compared to that of a new customer; their cheapest new joiner tariff is £43.49/month for 1GB of U.K. data, they want £119.99 upfront and you only get 750 U.K. landline and mobile minutes too. It's not your credit score that counts, it's your credit history. Any replies are my own personal opinion and not a representation of my employer.0
