Wifi very slow on Virgin router

We have a 60mb VM broadband cable connection to a Virgin router. While the ethernet links work ok, the wifi has been going very slowly lately whether on a laptop or a tablet. Often when I turn on my relatively new Lenovo laptop (win 8.1) it times out the wifi connection with a message wifi connection is taking longer than usual.

My hudl tablet also takes a long time. I have tried laptop and tablet in the same room and next door to the router and with same result. When I run the diagnostics it finds nothing wrong and tells me to check for something not plugged in, but all the cables are plugged in, firmly.

I think it must be a fault with the router . Anyone else have a similar problem? Is there anything I can do to diagnose or fix it myself? The VM technicians we have had round historically to install anything from Virgin have had no diagnostic ability at all. So am reluctant to get VM involved before trying any home remedies.

You can try changing the WiFi channel it's using which may (or may not) make a difference. There is a shedload of info online about choosing the best channel where you are.

You can complain to VM and ask for a replacement router which will be self fit.

You can buy your own wireless cable router and put your superhub in modem mode to use it.

This is good advice. I use a free Android app that should work on your hudl called Wifi Analyzer, I'm sure others are available too. It shows all the wifi networks in range and what channels they're on. You can easily see if there are lots of networks on the same channel as yours. It also has a signal strength meter to see if you're in a spot in the house where the wifi isn't reaching.

In my case there were 6 networks on the same channel or adjacent ones.

Once you've found a channel that is a little less crowded, login to your administration pages of the router and manually select the least busy channel that you found using the app.

    Good luck.
