Buying Forints for trip to Hungary

We are off to Hungary next month and our accommodation can be paid for in euros or forints. Also OH is keen to take some forints as he fears getting ripped off by euro exchange rate. Where to buy them?

Well a Thomas Cooks currency shop has recently open quite near us and according to websites, you get the best rate there by ordering online and collecting it. Well I don't know what it is wrong with their currency website but it is not working, just keeps timing out.

Anyone else bought forints for Hungary? If so where and how long in advance did you have to order them?

People utilise ATM machines on arrival. You get a much better rate of exchange and don't get stuck with unused currency.

Get a Revolut account each and request cards via the App.

Expect 355 as compared to 325 from Thomas Cook.

When withdrawing from ATM, always choose to to be charged in local currency. Accept no conversion.

A rather strange notion! The valid reason to avoid using euros in Hungary is that it's not their national currency so would likely be more expensive to use.

Instead of buying any kind of cash, consider Revolut and Metrobank. This would be worth perusing:

  • I don't know why the Forum Team took the view that writing that picking up currency on the High Street at a much reduced rate went out with the Bay City Rollers.
Has someone in the Bay City Rollers threatened to sue them? :rotfl:
    Ridiculous.
Some over-zealous editing going on there. No sense of humour at all.

Remarkable indeed. Perhaps a fear of reduced income from sponsored links to bureaux and the Travelmoneymax if too many people realise how pointless it is to buy foreign cash in UK.
